IC tank questions

Okay, I'm doing a larger turbo and alky in the next month or so, and my fuel system next week. i'm going to retain the air/water setup on my truck. i've searched the living crap outta this site and had a lot of questions answered, ideas spawned, and advice taken, but also created several more questions.
I'm going to put dual DeRale trans coolers w/ fans in the bed and eliminate the one in the radiator, and i'm also going to fab up an alum resivour/cooler tank for the IC in the bed also (ain't havin a truck nice, all this room to put chit! :cool: ) I'm thinking a 5 gallon resivour tank and a seperate tank insulated and filled with copper piping and ice, or should i just do one 12-15 gallon storage tank and just add ice to it, and let the ic pump suck up the extra water and drain it as nessicary? also would the Sur-flo pump i just bought be enough to pump from the bed to the IC? I'm going to put valves in the setup to switch between the CCHE on the street and the cooler at the track.

I was also just thinkin about just eliminating the front CCHE and putting a larger one in the bed with fans on it.
This also raises the question, would I need to cut holes in the bottom of the bed to let air in? or is there enough air volume/flow for just a CCHE/rad and fans to do the job?

I would just save time and not do anything since you are going with alky. It will provide cooling AND octane only when you need it. Right now you are planning on doing both. The alky will basically make the ice tank useless. You may get slightly cooler temps with the ice, but it doesn't have the fueling properties that alky does. You also carry around a lot of extra weight when you don't need it.

Alky has been proven hundreds of times with big boost and pump gas and 9 second or lower ETs. It will get you where you want to go w/o the ice chest.

Don't forget the huge hassle with purging the air out of the lines, 952 clamps to tighten and re-check, leaks to eliminate, etc.

I would add an aux trans cooler behind the grille and be done with it as well. There is such a thing as too cool of temps. If you go with such massive cooling, I would look into adding a thermostat into the setup to allow the trans fluid to heat up properly. You didn't list all of your mods - are you going with a mega HP combo that is going to be hard on the trans or are you going to be boost launching at every stoplight? Your ideas are great, don't get me wrong, I just don't want to see you waste money or time when yo don't have to.

you will notice all the fastest cars are runnig liquid to air ic's but no where near that much capicity. think about a 3-4 gallon system and you'd be better off.

I have done everything there is to do with a water to air besides put stuff in the bed.
Transmission coolers suck.....even ones with fans. (for intercooler heat exchangers)
The best thing to do is make sure the original heat exchanger has a scoop on it with a high flow water pump that always runs.
If you want extra, put some fans on the back of it.

I do have a 2.5 qt tank where the anti-lock brake unit use to be.
Its great on removing air out of the system however you have to seal off the intercooler completely. But this mod isn't for everyone.

The basic plans for the truck are primairly a weekend street/track truck. i'd like to have it in the low 12's high 11's this year, and high/mid 10's next year W/ the new motor (Vortech heads full work, cam, forged internals, 4 bolt block, etc etc) the trans will be replaced with a TH400 W/ 3200 stall, unless someone can reccommend a 700R4 build that will take 10-20 (hopefully) mid 10 second passes a weekend? and most likely a 12 bolt unless i can find a 8.5" 10 bolt at a good price. I'm putting in a fuel pump and AFPR wed or thursday, and in the next month or so a PTE66, 65lb injectors, and heat coating the manifolds and exhaust housing, and wrapping the down pipe and cross over pipe, and coating the intercooler.

so with alky/water a super efficient intercooler isn't as nessicary? i was going ot put everything fluid related to the IC system in the bed, have a custom made CCHE with fans mounted in the bed, with a resivour tank, and pump, then from there up to the IC and back. basicly because i want to clean up the engine bay as much as possible IE remove abs, air etc etc

There is no 700R4 that can stand up to the abuse in a SyTy for an extended period of time IMO. Go TH400 or 4L80E. An 8.5" rear should be plenty for the power you are planning to make. Hoovers and others are in the 9s on stock diffs with a few tweaks. I'm looking for an 8.5" rear with disc brakes myself for my turbo LS1. It has more HP potential than the V6 and I'm not worried about breaking a built 8.5" at all.

IMO you are correct with the alky statement. You can go 10s on stock IC. You can go 10s EASIER on an upgraded IC. If you want to clean up the engine bay area, go with the RPM A2A. It's amazing how much room you have left. I would get rid of the stock clutch fan (horrible idea on any car IMO) and go with the Ramchargers/Allstar electric fans or a set of SPALs. Lots of room to be gained in front of the motor as well.
