Just installed TE61 and 3" exhaust

I just finsihed installing a TE61 turbo with the ATR 3" downpipe and exhaust. The exhaust is 3" straight pipe all the way from the turbo back. I plan to install a 3" cat in the near future. Right now I am running a stock 2 bar chip with no egr. The engine is stock and stock injectors. I also have a 3k rpm stall converter and ATR IC. I have the boost level set at stock level because of the chip.
OK now the problem. I realize that this turbo should spool slower that the stocker, but the boost comes on VERY slowly. Its not like it lags a bit and then comes on all of a sudden. It just builds slowly up to whatever I have the boost level set at. It will eventually reach max boost. I tried as a test, just unhooking the vac line to the wastegate and watching the boost guage carefully hoping that maybe the wastegate was just starting to open too early, but that didn't help as it still was very slow to build boost. It will continue to build boost as long as I hold it down So I let off at 15 psi, but its well into the top of second before it ever gets there. I can stall it up on the brakes, and the boost will slowly climb, but it takes a while. I can find no exhaust leaks and the tubo is in like new condition. Right now it sucks to drive. Any suggestions as to what may be the problem?

Possible wastegate leak I suppose. This will create conditions like you are experiencing. What exhaust housing are you using?

Limit engineering turbo by John Craig. On the turbine side it is Precision 3 bolt A/R=.63 I am using the adapter, but I had it surfaced at a machine shop before installing it and it doesn't appear to be leaking anywhere. The gate is an external ATR that comes with the downpipe. The gate looked good when I had it off.
I adjusted the base boost pressure to 13 psi using the spring tension adjustment on the wastegate and that seemed to help a little, but its far from good. Also what kind of IC pipe is supposed to come with the kit? I had to make one using a radiator hose and some hose clamps. I was going to get the muffler man to bend some pipe, but he couldn't bend a tight enough radius to make it.

hahahah you expect ATR to supply an intercooler pipe with their kit!!

;) sorry... but every setup I've seen has either a stupid looking stocker bent outta shape (the wire reinforced stoke hose) or a funky radiator hose that was found at parts store, with goofy bends.

i see several possibilities

1- wastegate issue (that wg is a POS)
2- exhaust leak at 3-4 bolt adapter area
3- IC leak

The IC leak is looking more and more plausible, considering you are having difficulty making something work.

I used an air compressor with a regulator to pressurize everything from turbo in and I found a few leaks. The worst one was the large plug on the side of the TB. I fixed that and it made a huge difference in spool, but I'm still getting some leak action going on at the rubber IC to TB hose, where it goes on the TB. The hose looks good, and the clamp is tight, but it still leaks out between the hose and the TB inlet.
Its finally getting fun to drive again. Thanks!

glad i was able to steer you in the right direction. If you are using nitrile connectors they get pinhole leaks pretty easy and you cant ever find them.

Might want to try some nomex enforced silicone which has a better clamping distribution and some T bolt clamps.
