K&N directly on turbo

Well my cross over tube is cracking again after attempting to fix it, so to get rid of it I just got a k&n R1260 and put it straight on my stock turbo. Touches the heater hose and the radiator shroud, but it fits. K&n says the inlet ID is 2.25" / 57mm, and I measured the the od of the turbo at 2.38" / 60.5mm, but it fit over it fine. I think RU1700 would work ok too. I know it's a small filter, but these things flow more then people think. I'd prefer is not be hot air, but this will work for now.

I'll get a pic tomorrow if anyone is interested.

Re: K&N directly on turbo

It looks like a nice and clean engine bay.
Wish my Sy looked like that.

Keep it up and let us know how it is performing...I am going your way as the cross over tube had cracked so severly now that it is not completely sealed where the plastic is connecting to the turbo.

This has been done before and I believe most owners find that the intake temps get real hot pulling that air off the radiator. I do like the look of it just seems like it would cause heat related perfromance issues. just my .02

Be aware with the cobra elbow that Sy/Ty's and other turbo vehicles have been known to suck the cobra elbow closed under 15+psi boost conditions! A local truck had this problem and drove us nuts figuring it out.:2cents:

These goddamned air tubes.
Can any fabricators make some of these up in aluminum or fiberglass or something that won't f*cking crack? I don't want to go through rerouting the battery and/or coolant tank to install an air filter in their place. Nor do I really want to do a cobra elbow or stick a filter right on the turbo where it's going to get nice warm air in there. I just would like one that doesn't crack every few months. The gorilla tape wrapped air tube looks kinda G-H-E-T-T-O.

Re: K&N directly on turbo

I saw this at advance auto today and thought it would be a good solution but it looks cheap anybody try it or know how it flows?

I run a K&N straight off the turbo and my IAT aren't that bad around 110 around town on a 80-90* day with an upgraded Johnson intercooler pump. It was going to be a temporary solution but this temporary solution has been on the truck for 5 or 6 years now.

Re: K&N directly on turbo

I used this hk mushroom filter for a year or so directly on the turbo and it was fine. I didn't like the look of it and went with a cobra elbow and kn filter

I was looking at those today but I need the one with the 4" inlet. I think the part # was 70019-bk006? I just might have to make my own set-up.

To repair the air intake just cut off the crack and get some 3 inch stove pipe and glue it in the end.I have repaired three Tys this way and never a problem. The clamp holds on the reinforced
end.

Re: K&N directly on turbo

Mine's not directly on my turbo but it's close. Just a short 3" diameter pipe connecting the cobra head to the filter in the ATR box.
