Knocky Knock Knock!

The deaded knock is back in a big way in my Ty. So bad I can actually hear it now. The ultimate flashes like crazy and the truck just runs like shit with anything more than 1/2 throttle or 5 PSI. It used to get lots of knock that registered on DM, but I could never actually hear it. Timing and fuel pressure is at the factory settings. No vac leaks, IC pump works, and it runs fine while not under boost. Could the plugs/cap/wires need changing already? They were new 5-7K ago. If not, what else could it be? I just fed up because it was finally gone and now its back even worse. :squint: The motor has 117K on it, maybe its just had enough. What would I expect to pay for a stock rebuild?

I remember setting my timing too far advanced, which gave me alot of part throttle knock.
Since your TY has 117K your timing may have slipped. Try readjusting it and see if it goes away....

Re: Knocky Knock Knock!

Timing was way off (about 12*). Fixed that, cleaned the air filter, checked for vac leaks, changed the oil and it runs much better now. I don't understand how the timing keeps changing on me.

Re: Knocky Knock Knock!

Did you use a piston stop to verify the timing? The balance slips so its not always an accurate number. The only other way it be changing is if you not tightening down the distributor properly (that bolt can be difficult for those inexpereinced)

X2... And as I've mentioned before but I'll say again. I actually found my dist bolt loose. Also the fork thingy can be off the dist (it's supposed to be able to do that for dist removal) and the bolt still be tight. Just make sure you can't turn the dist after tightening the bolt.

Yea I checked for TDC on #1 and its right on with the mark. If its off its only by a couple tenths at most. I am getting good at getting to that hold down bolt, I tightened it really good this time. Hopefully it will stay put!

if it is the stock balancer, the elastomer ring has a tendency to slip, causing the timing mark on the outer ring to point to the 'inaccurate' position. You can pick up a Streetdampr or Fluidampr unit and that all goes away.
