laptop recommendations?

I plan on buying a new laptop for Christmas and was wondering what you guys recommended as far as requirements if I plan on data-logging/tuning?

This laptop isn't going to be solely dedicated to the Typhoon. It is going to be used for everything (internet, office, downloads, pictures, blah blee blah). TIA.

Maybe the Dell mini 9 or Acer eeepc. They are super small and solid state hard drives.

I'm currently researching the same thing. Our home desktop got fried by a voltage spike, and a laptop replacement will be a little more versatile. Many of the online reviews and Consumer Reports seem to favor Dell and HP. Thats as far as I've gotten though. There are way too many choices. I will use our new laptop 99.9% as a home computer and .1% as a datalogger. I'm not concerned about how it will work as a datalogger, just that it will work. As for specs, I'm thinking about something in the $600-800 range with 3GB RAM, 300GB hard drive, 15-17" screen, and a fast processor. BestBuy.com, some other online places, and some of the manufacturers have programs that recommend computers based on your usage. Unless you're trying to program while you drive, I don't see much benefit in buying a smaller computer. A larger laptop should work just fine (I hope).:2cents:

A word of caution - make sure your datalogger/tuning program will run with your operating system. Some new laptops come with 64bit Windows Vista that will not run older programs. I've heard of similar probs with regular Vista.

Check the "for sale" section on here, I believe there are used laptops w/ datalog programs for sale right now.

Big screen, good processor, 2gig mem, XP if poss, Trouble with Dell and HP is all the extra fluff they put on the machines. I use an old W98 laptop just for datalogging and the desktops (2) for everything else.

Datamaster will run on 32 bit Vista.

I always reload with a normal Dell XP or Vista disk with out the "Billboard" OS. I can send you a CD/DVD of XP or Vista if you get one. It is OS only no worries for advertising software loaded ie 30 trials.

I also recommend Trend Micro security suite. It has low overhead and does a great job.

You can get a dell XPS M1530 for about 1k now. May be over kill not sure. I buit my XPS with 4gig ram 160 gig HD and everything else that was offered at the time for it except the blueray player. It is my work laptop however it is used for so much more.

Also with Dell they put in Computrace in the bios on most of thier laptops now. So if it gets stolen they can trace it. It is a manual setting you have to change in the bios one you have it.

I'm running Vista 32bit Business and running TunerPro RT, Scanner Pro, and Datamaster. You can always turn on compatibility mode for apps that don't like Vista. I'm running USB only. The only thing is for my WB I have a Serial to USB converter for it. When I hook it up directly to the laptop with out the ALDL. However USB is the way to go for sure. Quick connections and you can change your Com ports easly in the hardware management.

Last night I actually pretty much decided on the Inspiron 1525, any opinions on this machine? It runs at about $599 and has pretty comparable hardware compared to their other laptops in the $1K range.

Also, where is the best place to get this? Straight from Dell?

They basically have everything you could want >.>


Best bet is to find a laptop with at least a 2 ghz CPU and 2 gigs of Ram the video card shouldn't matter since you don't plan on play video games.


You can build one through dell and throw on their warranty if you like >.>

Play with the prices find one that you want they even have different colors

I have an apple, and love it! I do have a dell, it is OK, but it goes through battery like crazy, and is OK. The Apple software is very easy to use, and professional looking!

im also looking at laptops. can any of these programs be run on an apple or do i need a windows machine?
