Looking at buying a Ty....

Want a Ty
Hey guys,

I'm somewhat new to the whole syty scene...just looking for some 'tips' on what to look for when looking at purchasing a ty.

I found a few local ty's that look pretty nice...

1 white on white one...67k...~$13k obo
1 black on black one...160k...~6k obo

Price range is probably closer to $6k or around there.
I can post pictures and information on them if you guys would be able to help me out.

Thanks in advance!

Wyomissing? That's near Reading, right? There are a couple of SyTyers up there that could help you out.

Also, try to make some NASTE events...like the one at Hooters NJ "sometime" in December...get to know these trucks *before* you buy one. Somehow this makes it less painful when things start breaking. Plus, you get to meet some key SyTyers who know more about these trucks than most GMC mechanics. (not me)

Re: Looking at buying a Ty....

i talked to the guy with the '92 black/black Ty located in Fairless Hills, PA.

He said that the trans. is slipping and needs to be replaced or rebuilt. needs a new rear. needs a new blower motor switch, was hit in the front and the cladding is 'twisted'...so i would need to try and find replacement cladding for the front pieces.

he said he had atr replace the turbo with a stock turbo...but also said it was a dual ball bearing turbo...not too sure about that?? has atr headers, upgraded front prop shaft, boostvalve, windows are a little slow and sometimes dont go up and down. he also said the cladding in the rear has faded a decent amount and could use some work.

He said he is looking to get $6,000 for it as is but would be willing to negociate down to $5,000.

I told him i'm willing to offer him closer to $2,000 if that, with all the problems and the amount of work im going to need to put into it just to get it running...and then even more to get it to the point where its presentable.

Do you guys think thats a fair price to offer him for the truck in the condition it's in?

Let me know.
Thanks!

Re: Looking at buying a Ty....

$2000 is low for a truck in running condition..

if everything is there, and the motor is stong, $5000 isn't a bad price.. but $2000 is quite low.. if you get it for that you stole that ty.

Sounds like a real piece of shit to me. That truck could easily chew through $3-4k and many hours to get it, roadworthy and presentable.

yeah...thats why i offered him what i did.

I think i am going to go take a look at it and see exactly how bad of condition it is in, in person.

Here is the picture of it that i was able to get.

Re: Looking at buying a Ty....

That "twisted" front bumper cover should be an easy fix. Just needs to be adjusted. I'd say it's worth at least $4,500 if it's complete and running, even if you do have to spend $3k+ to make it nice.

Re: Looking at buying a Ty....

even with 160k miles on it?
the motor itself runs, but he said that i has a 'bad noise' to it.
the trans. slips very badly and the rear is blown.
so i dont know if you consider that 'running'?

Re: Looking at buying a Ty....

You are in need of a complete drivetrain, a paint job on the cladding, and probably the truck, then whatever else you need to fix the slow windows, rattles, etc. If its overall in that poor a condition mechanically, I'd also assume all front end bushings, ball joints and tie rods have all been neglected as well. Mine is still for sale for a little longer; until we get permanent snow. Then its up for the winter.

I'd buy vermontty's truck before I'd even consider buying that one.
