max boost level?

is there a way to tell just how much boost your motor is capeable of without destroying anything?
im using a manual boost controller and i want to see what the limit is or atleast get as close to it (limit) as i can. just to know my limit so i know where to stop. i'm not on a suicide mission in case anyone is wondering.
i'm running at 18psi now and know i am more than capeable of running in the 20's. if you guys can help i sure would appreciate. T-I-A


the reason i ask this is because bruce(syclone#2960) and i went at it a bit on a highway roll and he got me. i was at his rear 1/4 panel/bumper and stayed there. he is running at 20psi on his typhoon and i am at 18psi. didn't think 2psi would make that much of a difference, buuut...i guess so. it's probably his setup compared to mine as well.

Hate to say it you are going to pop the motor.

You need a chip and 3 bar map that is made for the extra boost(more fuel) you need to do some research and look on the site. The EMCs are not like obd1 and obd2 computers. They are speed density and what they chip is set at for fueling and timing that is what it is going to do.

To run in the 20's you need to also look into some like meth or add octance fuel (hope you are running 93). You need to do some research on here.

Hate to break this to ya, but 18 psi on the average pump gas is killing your motor already. 20 will just do it faster. Running either without a really good tune (ie, not an Ultimate or any other off-the-shelf chip) will accelerate the process even further.

just a word to add, his truck isn't stock. I can't remember what chip he has, but i'm pretty sure he had a 3 bar chip/map. You should look into alcohol injection nick, it'll make it safer to run upwards of 15psi. you can get a setup for under $500, wont take too long to install.

NIck is running an ultimate vortec, 50lbs. 412 cam 3 bar chip. The BIG olskool unit.
He also has that big ass air to air unit in the front. Should keep him safer than a stocker under boost.

BTW Nick on the chasis dyno I determined 1psi = 11.66hp.

yeah, to say the least but to add to that i also have the 255 wal. fuel pump with the 20amp fuse,vortec heads with larger valves(can't remember the specs on the valves),25g turbo,57mm bbk throttle body,3 bar map and a couple of other things i'm leaving out i'm sure.

and yes i'm running 93 and only 93 octane (chevron and nothing else).

i myself stay at around 12 psi on pump low timing ,anything higher only vp c116 safe to about 25 or even a bit more,stock rods pistons etc?

You could use a zylene/93 octane (sp?) mix like Jim D does in his sy. Race fuel is more corrosive than e-85 according to a test Mick did with it and very expensive. Might want to ask him about next time you come by.
Scott found a pretty good deal on WBo2 setups localy for $240.00. I'm going to go ahead and get one my self for the ty just to be safe. I'm not going to let you blow up your shit with out one.:lol:

What style manual boost controller do you have? If its like the rest of us that have it all the way screwed in would equal 26-28 psi.

it's a hallman boost controller>screw-in style. i leave it at/around the recommended 3/4 mark. i actually, just yesterday in-fact, made a bracket out of stainless sheet metal for it and mounted it on the side of the radiator support. just behind the pass. side headlight.

i dialed the boost down some more to 17psi after reading what the other guys had posted in this thread~in fear of "BOOM!"

One thing to bear in mind - when you start running high boost you need a blow off valve otherwise the backpressure from the turbo will go through the compressor blades. That is bad and cost a member here 2 turbos I think.

Up to you to determine how much you will run without the BOV (assuming you haven't got one already)

that was one of the things i was missing in my set-up description. one of the larger ones. i don't know the mm's. it's a tial knock-off cause it looks just like one only it doesn't say tial:rant:
