Modded Spindle Pics - Brake Upgrade

When I was gearing up to start hacking on my truck, I had a hard time locating pictures of the modification required to our spindles when upgrading to bigger brakes. Here are some pics of the passengers side:

I don't know Ry, I think a sawzall wouldn't work that great. I mean really, it couldn't even cut through that stud on the power steering pump:lol:

I don't know Ry, I think a sawzall wouldn't work that great. I mean really, it couldn't even cut through that stud on the power steering pump:lol:

A sawsall will work with a good quality blade (Piranha bi-metal #PR750). I cut my 2WD spindles on the truck to put LS1 brakes on. The 2WD removes about the same amount of material as 4WD spindles. It cut fairly quickly.:tup:

I would opt for an airtool with a cutting blade.

Thats how I cut my axles to fit the aftermarket wheels ---

Where does one find a Piranha blade?

I think at HOME DEPOT is where I got it. Gold colored blade. I used it to trim the rear axle for LS1 discs also. It probably can be found anywhere, just a bit more expensive.

I used a sawzall then cleaned things up with a cut-off wheel on a die grinder.

nice, but if you have to do all the work pulling the driveshafts out. why you just don't take the spindle off???
seems like a quicker way than taking the driveshafts out? i did 2 trucks now, and when the weather turn's around i'll be doing my third. only done c5's gonna do the ls1's next.

so it is possible to do brake upgrades on a 2wd? i've been thinking about doing it for a while but since the 2wd spindle and hub are one piece i couldn't see how you would affix the conversion brackets.

you have any pics of the install, i'm very curious?

Renz is looking into making brackets for these. I bought the hubs, but looking at them, I could have had the originals cut down at a machine shop for $ 20+ a piece. I didn't take pics when I did it (old garage was small & dark), but as soon as we hit a nice warmer, sunny day when I don't have anything else on my plate, I'll pull wheels & take pics. I need to take pics of the rear e-brake bracket I made for the LS1's & post them up also.

Hey Bezerk! Well, taking the spindle off, you have to pull the drive shaft out of the spindle... Not sure the workload is much different. It really doesn't take any time to pull the shafts, seems like pulling the spindles off the arms would be more work. Plus leaving it on the truck makes for a nice secure spindle and that is a nice thing when you are sawzalling and grinding.

My truck has 117,000 miles or so on it. The drivers side cv boot had split and so I decided to replace both half shafts while I was doing the brake upgrade; they were coming out anyway. I also bought new hubs and will put those on as well.

I cut my new axles with my sawzall and it went through it quick. I think a quality blade on a sawzall trumps the cutoff wheel. But either way ya go, as long as it works right?

nice, well i just grind 1'' out of the drifeshafts since they are to long anyway, and that way i can just take the nut of them (wich you gotta do anyway) unscrew the nuts from upper lower, and steering, and they will fall right out, that remove brake line (we all gotta do it) and it's off.
i'm not judging, but i think i did all of them in 1 hour or so.. and install new seals while you're at it.

alos if you can keep your dieveshaft inplace as i see in this method it will be for sure a fast job than taking drive shaft out or take spindle off

Not sure about that price. I did the LS upgrade on the Syclone. I have begun to collect parts for a C5 conversion on the Typhoon however:

Also, if you are going to buy the brackets and collect the rest of the parts yourself, get banjo fitting bolts from a Camaro or the like. I got mine at the junkyard from a trailblazer. I also found a local fastener place that had the right length bolts for the hub/adapter.
