Well, I decided I might go ahead and document my build. Over the next few months I will take pics and post up my results of everything I am doing. So far on the list is:
Stock block
nitraded mini stroked crank
main studs
lunati rods
je pistons
kenne bell cam
2.02 vortec heads
pt60
billet rails
bigger injectors

I will also be doing a ton of work in the engine bay getting it all cleaned up and finalized. I will post pics tomorrow of the shot engine I just bought. Will be dropping it off at the machine shop on Wednesday. Stay tuned.

Alright, uploaded some pics of my "progress". So far I have the motor torn down and most everything out of the engine bay.

There is a lot less in the bay now, I'll have to update that tomorrow.

Here is the mini stroker crank I just got

Here is what the bearings looked like that came out of it

And the cylinder walls, looks like a good hone will fix them up well, no ridge what so ever and they look fairly clean

Here is the Lunati rods with JE pistons. Rings look brand new and spraying the top of the piston with brake cleaner cleaned them up almost 100%

Vortec heads going in

Stock cam, rods and pistons

My intake before the conversion

Bottom side

And the stock crank

So here it is so far. This weekend I'll be pulling the TY out to wash the frame and clean it all up. Still can't decide on the whole core support thing though. The intake should be done by next week so I will post those pics up. Motor gets dropped off at the machine shop Friday. Probably will have the short block completed with in the month and the long block by the end of October. My realistic dead line is March or April but if all goes well and I stay busy working it will be much sooner like October-December.

In the one pic you call it a "mini stroker crank".
Is that an offset grind crank?
If it is, I'm not so sure that would be your best choice to install into your rebuild.

And how many miles since the last rebuild?

Yeah its an offset ground nitraded crank. If it doesn't need to be ground but maybe a good polish I will re-use it. Its has 15k on it. This entire motor ran a best of 11.9 up here at 6000' on the KB chip. It was sold to a guy who apparently ran it low on oil one too many times. It was running before the truck was parted out. The truck this motor was run in was ran hard and built for it. I will let the machine shop give me the final call on if I should use it or not. If I cant use it, then I cant use anything.

I have another offset ground crank if this one has issues. Let me know what the machine shop says! But this one would need to be looked at as well...

They look better than my Omni's after 18k miles too

Re: Motor rebuild for 92TY#73

Made some progress on the stripping the engine bay down tonight. Also took some pics. I took the core support out and removed the engine wiring harness. What a PITA!!!! I plan on making a new connector for the wiring to the WB. I hope it doesn't affect the connection/data. I plan on drilling a bigger hole (about 1"), and using a 1"x3/8" grommet. Cutting only the radius so that I can slide the harness in to the hole and then plug the grommet in to the firewall. There are about 12 holes drilled for various things. It is pretty ridiculous. I want to narrow as much down as possible and keep it simple and plug the unused holes.

Here is a pic before the harness came out

Here is after

And here is my hacked up core support

Tomorrow or Sunday I will back the truck out and clean it up, the frame and firewall that is. I dropped the motor off at the machine shop today and will know Tuesday what kind of shape it is in and what I will be looking at to get it going money wise.

Looks like your havin some fun Mike! I'm shocked the bearings don't look worse after seeing the oil run so low.......less pan windage...lol! Good luck with the rebuild.....your gonna like that 272 incher with the vortecs.....I can't wait to see the results!

Should still be a standard 2.0(small sbc)......I'd just polish and re-use it.....did you get the ati balancer that was on it!?

The machine shop looked at it and he seemed to be optimistic about it all but I wont know anything for sure until Tuesday.

Made more progress this weekend. Got the front of the frame stripped down to where I want it. No I am not going to do all my suspension:lol: I am going to start working on covering some holes up in the firewall and the wiring this week. I pressure washed everything this afternoon so here are some pics I took earlier.

Re: Motor rebuild for 92TY#73

Got the Intake manifold back today. I had it welded up for the Vortec heads. I decided I didn't like the way most people just extend the intake ports so I had the whole length done. I plan on cleaning them up to where it doesn't look welded. Also I smooth the edges out. Of course over the next few days or so I will be opening up the intake ports to match the heads. My buddy did a really good job welding this, I was impressed. Also, anyone know how to get those fitting out? The CTS is cross threaded in there and has been for years and when I tried to get it out it just started cracking. Not too concerned about the nipple but would like to fix the CTS bung.

What starts to crack? The sender? Shudda had your buddy warm the manifold and just pull both. Some heat on the alum should get it out I would think. I managed to break mine so it's getting replaced anyway.

Gotta hand it to ya Mike. Yur going way further than I am. I'm hoping that when mine's together it'll look like I never touched it. But then again, bigger turbo, bat relocation.

Re: Motor rebuild for 92TY#73

Yeah the sender was starting to crack. I may take my MAPP torch and see if I can heat it up enough to get it out. The whole idea here is like you said, to make it look like I wasnt in there. Even if there are obvious things I want my engine bay to look like it came that way. I think I will even grind the welds off the intake to make it look natural. But then I would have to do the whole thing.

As far as the stroke on the crank I am not sure. I am pretty sure its not much, Ry could chime in and probably tell ya.

try some heat, remove, chase the threads with a die at the proper angle, new sensor.

Wow, you really added material for the vortec mod. Be sure it all clears I suspect it will hit the head casting where it isn't machined.

Yeah Dilbert was supposed to take 13mm off but thought it was best if I did it. JK, I was just going to have the machine shop do it.
