My first Ty engine questions.

I just brought home my Ty last Saturday. I made the eight hour trip from Dallas with no problems other then having to stop and get my two front tires balanced to clear up a shimmy issue.

It got about 19.3 mpg on the interstate doing 70 to 80.
Sunday I removed the old pugs which all look to have normal wear. There was no discoloration or anything. I popped in a new fuel filter because I could tell it still had the original one in. There was a slight hesitation problem and putting the new fuel filter cleared that up. My truck has 75k miles on it btw and I cannot hear any spark knocking under boost conditions.

I bought a new cap , rotor and wires but have not put them on yet. It idles ok but you can feel it could better because it shutters every now and then. Hopefully when I finish the tune up and installing new vacuum hoses that will clear that up. Which brings me to my first question. Can I use any old vacuum hose from the parts store or what?

Secondly the hard plastic hose to my map sensor and on the turbo etc look to be in good condition. Should I replace them anyways?

It burns oil on start up. I know this is a valve seal problem. I know they need to be changed but do you think I can wait on that for a little while? I hate to go tearing the top end of the motor apart this early after getting it.

Other than that the only other thing I see that kinda worrys me is that it looks like the front diff is leaking around where the cv shafts go in. But its not bad enough to leak on the driveway or anything. It's just bad enough to pass your hand on it and get it wet. Nut I'll post that question in the appropriate forum.

Oh yea I have another question. the zero to sixty times for the Ty's of being around 5 seconds. Is that by doing a boost launch or should I get that from WOT at a dead stop? Because I dont thing Im getting close to that from a dead stop.

I have not boost launched it yet till I make sure everything is ok. Other then that when boost kicks in it pulls pretty good like a V8.

Re: My first Ty engine questions.

I used regular silicone vac line from the auto store and I haven't had any problems. I would change over all the vac lines no matter if they look good or not. I would also change the check valves and T's while you are at it. There are a few members/vendors on here that sell vac kits.

As far as you burning oil on start up, IIRC all SyTy's burn a little on start up. Its from the turbo and everyone says its normal and OK.

Ahh. I feel better about the oil burn now..thanks!

Just because you don't hear knock doesn't mean its not happening inside your motor.

Option 1: You should do some reading first, Datamaster is the first tool you need to see how the truck runs before you go beating on it.

Option 2: Go out and buy a few jack stands, put broken truck on them.

I totally agree on replacing the vacuum lines, you don't want to lose an engine over $20-30 in parts. The puff of smoke is valve seals. Not all truck do it, but many do. It's not going to cause any major damage.

I went WOT one time on the test drive from the lot to listen for spark knock. I originally went up there to get their Sy but it was ragged out and spark knocked terribly.

Re: My first Ty engine questions.

Chances are you won't hear knock at all, even when its happening. The first time you do hear it might be the rod knocking on the frame rails.

Like mentioned a scantool is best, congrats on the purchase and welcome to the online forum of insane people (we just use the words syty as a cover)

You are not likely to hear knock. Years ago when my truck was basically stock I could feel the timing being yanked through the quarter mile, I couldn't hear any knock though.

X4, you may be able to hear knock when you put low octane fuel in, but you will not hear knock as a laptop/cable combo will. That is what you need to make it run perfect, plus some alky :D

Check out code59.org for some good info on chipping your ty and increasing the boost.

But before you do that, make sure you go through your ty with all the reliability mods, then start your venture for more boost, if that is what you intend on doing.

Here's a link all syty owners should read! Thank you TOOKY!

Re: My first Ty engine questions.

You drove 8 hours from Dallas in the Typhoon you just bought? Where did you go (where do you live)?

I agree with what everyone is suggesting. Create a starting point by replacing everything cheap that needs to be replaced (don't forget the antifreeze and the small fuel line size hose from the water pump to the turbo). Do each one at a time and test drive between (just to be safe). I have seen failures in new parts.

This way, you have a good starting place.

Have some fun with it!!! Post some pictures.
