Need a good Sy/Ty shop in South Fl and I have some engine questions

Anyone know of a good shop in S. FL? I need to talk to someone who knows this engine. I have a shop that maybe taking me for a ride.

The main questions I have is:

1.Can you use another 4.3 motor in this truck? They said it won't work because the Sy is an even fire crank and the regular 4.3 is an odd fire. I've never heard of this. I also see posts of other people using these engines.

2.Can you scope the cylinder to tell if there is piston / wall damage.


3.Can you put oil in the cyl with low comp. pressure to help id if it's the piston rings? If the pressure doesn't change it's a head/valve issue.

I have a few syty blocks in the shop also if you are in need of one.

I don't have another shop to recommend but I agree with Harmon that you should run as fast as you can from that garage . I would love to sit in on the conversation as they expound on question #1 though .

My understanding is that if you can put a teaspoon or so of oil in the cylinder with low compression, and if the compression comes up, that indicates a problem with the rings. If the compression stays the same, problem is with the head/valves.

What are your compression numbers? Is it smoking? If so, only on startup or all the time?

Any scenario, sounds like you need to pull the heads. I know it sucks, but better to just accept it.

Just do a basic cylinder compression test and
post the cylinders pressure to give us a better idea !! :tup:

Thanks for responding so fast!!! I did have them perform a leak down test but I'm not sure I trust them at this point. They said it most likely the piston ring lands and they just happen to know a machine shop with a Z code 4.3 that has been rebuilt and 20 original miles on it. (not 20k just 20) He wants 5k for the motor and they want 1500 to do the swap. I'm sure I can get a motor built with better internals for that price.

The readings from the leakdown test were cylinders: 1) 75 2) 155 3)160 4) 155 5) 160 6) 60

I'm not sure if I understood their readings correctly but the drivers side front and rear cylinders were low; 75 & 60, all the rest were ok or above 150, The issue is on the same side of the engine (drivers side) with the middle cylinder reading normal.

I read in the Chilton's guide about pouring oil down the cylinder to verify if the issue is related to a faulty piston ring.

The truck does smoke at start up and under boost I get smoke and burning oil smell. This is probably because I get oil in the intake (air filter, turbo). I also see smoke coming out of the oil filler cap when removed. I don't really feel any air pressure coming out just a light smoke. No engine codes come on. It does feel sluggish and the idle is rough. It also stalls on occasion when I drop it into gear. The oil smells and looks fine and so does the coolant.

just because the engine is a Z code doesnt mean shit. A standard Z code engine does not have SyTy low compression pistons in it, the head gaskets are probably some cheap off the shelf crap. If the shop rebuilt it, its probably got a cut crankshaft, and if so how much, anymore than .010" is kind of frowned upon in the SyTy world......... oh, and 5K is a rip off IMO.

I did a stock refresh (no machine work) for $700 about 5 years ago for a former owner. New rings, bearings, gaskets, paint, waterpump and some other little things. Granted I can do it all myself, so it really depends on what youre capable of. Considering you have 6 posts, Im guessing you just got the truck. If thats the case, I strongly suggest you invest that $6500 they want for the engine and install, buy an engine hoist, jackstands, floor jack and some decent tools and learn to do it yourself. These trucks can become very expensive for the novice owner.

This is my 2nd Ty, and I'm pretty capable. I never rebuilt a 4.3 but have done a 5.7 a long time ago. This was in my high school auto mechanics class with every tool/resources imaginable.

As far as the response to the Z code engine I misspoke. The engine is an original Syclone motor that had 20 miles on it. The machine shop rebuilt it with stock internals because of its age. I assume they have paper work to back it up. I think tha's rather high especially if you did a rebuild for $700. Is Earth anywhere close to Miami? I would love to take in this challenge and probably might knowing it's gonna save me a lot of money. I just don't have the facilities and time right now.

The numbers stamped onto the block would be more telling than any paper work they show you . Unless they had some pictures , certified for destruction title , and/or the salvage auction documents where they bought this 20 mile Syclone from , I'd be skeptical on that whole deal . You dont just find lying around such low original mileage Syclone motors and then rebuild them because of age alone .
