if you leave it stock it will be like any other 10+ year old truck. my first sy got it at 70k miles did a seal on the front end and a tranny rebuild at 100k other than that i did plugs and wires once, fuel filter and it high 12's at 101 mph. sold that truck at 120k miles and got myself a 25k mile truck and i have done plugs wires and a fuel filter so far. had it almost 2 years. but its had only 5k miles put on it. dont beat on them and they wont beat up your wallet.

PS you should buy my syclone!!!!

If you have at least twice the asking price of one go ahead and buy it because u need that much money to maintain it.

Basically, if you want the truck to run at its potential, you are going to have to put in some wrench time. If the vehicle is overall sound, and you keep it close to stock, they can be low maintainence. Once you start upgrading, its the snowball effects. You want more boost, so you upgrade chip, then injectors, then it gets serious, with turbo and intercooler, along the way a trans, etc.

I have kept my close to stock. It came with a ?? trans rebuild that shifts firm. With the exception of the fuel system (rusty lines and bad pump) it has been (gasp) reliable. It may not idle perfectly, and its not as fast as some of the other guys who have gone nuts, but it hasnt failed me beyond the fuel pump.
Keep good gas in it, Tune up at least once a year, and keep the boosted launches to a minimum, and I would GUESS to say it can be pretty reliable.

This is my opinion

i want one for the same reason everyone does, because they are sweet and to go fast. i have no intentions on doing like a turbo upgrade or anything right away or for even a couple years but i dont want to get it and then realize i might have made a mistake...twice the asking price :crazyeye: are you serious

i wouldnt say twice the asking price, i never spent more than 500 or so but i did a lot of the removal and install of the tranny nd front diff that saved on labor. i would say having about 800-1000 extra dollars in a syty savings fund would cover just about anything that could go wrong.

Objectively, I believe the following:
1. Ask yourself "why" you want either a Sy or TY
(performance, resale/collector investment, awd/winter driving, etc).
2. Ask yourself "who will maintain/repair" this vehicle
(because dealerships, parts, vendors, service technicians are
costly and rare/sparce).
3. Ask your insurance agent "what it takes to insurance a Sy or Ty
(as theft, break in, parts/cladding for minor accidents, and
such make insurance $$$$)
4. Can you afford some type of "warrantee", would you be buying
a low-mileage/high $$$$ Sy or Ty, versus a high mileage used
(or abused) Sy or Ty from an unknown.
5. If you "think" performance comes "cheap", know upfront that
maintenance includes wastegate, turbo/IC, tuning, exhaust/cat
brakes/abs, tranny, and ignition "care/scrutiny" (or more $$$$$).
6. And lastly, stock wheels (bend easy, and are hard to balance)
are costly, but after market wheels require offset factory matching
(or adaptors) making the choices narrow for noncustom rims.

In short, the factory/GM "gave up" trying to maintain these
vehicles (blown motors, trannys, torque converter recall/shaking,
ECM idling problems ect) by publishing a "checklist" to
separate warrantee coverage/owners (and thus minimize factory
responsibilty/liability).

So, if you arent a born fanatic (diehard Sy/Ty fan from 1991);
or lack mechanic (tools and knowledge); or own lots of $$$$
(and a second main vehicle for daily transportation); then buy
something else (which IS maintain-able, insure-able, reliable,
easier to work on/supportable, larger-number-produced, and
later modeled...and maybe same or lesser priced).

In summary, the low-relative numbers of Sy/Tys left,
make the probability of getting a "lemon", very high
(as those of us in the SyTy community that have vehicles
running properly, probably are reluctant to part with them at this stage).
Cuz we`ve suffered through the items mentioned above.

NO OFFENSE:
But I realize, most 18 year olds dont want/care to hear talk
of this nature (and thus will probably do whatever anyway).
Just like "mentioning" that every Cop will suddenly become interested
in "following you" after purchase/license/insurancing.

just my $0.02

Not that you'll listen, as I know I didn't at your age, but here is some advice looking back:

I wanted one when I was 16, hell before that. I'm 27 now and got my sy when I was 23. Knowing what I know now, I am glad I waited and probably should have waited even longer, but didn't. I have NO tickets and NO accidents with this thing and I totalled 2 cars, got a dwi, several tickets all between the ages of 16-18. I'm going 9 years now without anything, even a parking ticket. But I learned the hard way and i'm glad those two totalled vehicles were lowered 89 and 91 s-10's and not my Syclone I own today.

But of course it won't happen to you.......don't worry, I know, i'm still invinsible at 27, or better yet, i'm still an idiot, its jus that now i realize i'm an idiot rather than being an idiot about being an idiot!

i have wanted a sy/ty since i knew what they were which was when i was 12. i'm not going to lie, i dont know a ton about them. i love to read about them and like working on cars. i have a daily driver car casue my s10 was bagged and didnt work half the time. i'm a very caucious driver, no tickets yet or even gotten pulled over for that matter. my neighbor who is also my good friend has a typhoon and him and his dad have warned me about getting one due to all the work that is required with them. as for why i want one, i like them a lot, i like that they were limited and their speed and the rarity of them. my parents havent checked the ensurence yet but if its to much i dont know what i will do. if i buy one i will have to probably buy a higher milage one though i dont want one with over 90 thousand on it. thanks for all the help everyone, any more would be helpful.
