Need some smog tips

So of course my Ty failed smog. From what my buddies say, it failed all around...

They added new plugs and added some engine cleaner to the fuel, and it passes at high RPM's, but fails at low RPM. The car has been sitting for around 6 months, and I don't know how much before I bought it. They say that is hunts around at idle and moves around 1-200rpms.

I am trying to see what are some simple things to try... They are going to try to run it around a bit and see if it clears up and such.

I would have tried a bunch of stuff, but I have been overseas, and am TDY right now for training, and I am having them get the emissions/title and stuff for me, so I can hopefully take it to England with me.

Code what?

Check all the basic stuff, tune up, vacuum hoses for leaks, fuel filter, air filter. Correct injectors/chip combo, I'd do a fuel system service with sea foam to eliminate any carbon buildup around the valves, injectors. Make sure it's getting hot enough and going into closed loop. An engine temp up closer to 200* will help

If it hunts at idle, that means its too rich at idle. If it has an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, turn the pressure down a good amount. Add a quart of denatured alcohol to a 1/4 tank of fuel and you should pass.

Turn the idle up to 1000 RPM , (helps w/the idle hunting around), by the throttle body stop screw # 10 Tork tool. IIRC

Retard the timing by 10 degrees. This is for smog only, don't race it around retarded 10 degrees.

Make sure the tech lights off the cat, run engine @ 2500 RPM for 4-5 minutes, then do the test right away.

I would make sure whoever is working on your truck puts in the correct plugs. Some parts places have the wrong part number for plugs. If you have the wrong plugs its only going compound your issues.

The idle shouldn't be moving around 100-200 rpm. Most likely either you have a leaking vacuum lines or dirty iac valve/iac passages. A dirty egr could also cause a poor idle.

Good news! Not sure what the guys did, but they got it to pass smog. It probably failed from sitting for so long... I think they just put in new plugs and drove it around a bit to clear things out...

1 step closer to getting it to England. Once I get it to England, that is when the build thread WILL BEGIN! So pumped!

Cool, forgot to mention too, I also retard timing about 7 degrees with code 59.

So what I basically do is retard timing, lower fuel pressure to 37 psi, and add a quart of denatured alcohol to 1/4 tank of gas. Passes with flying colors. Lol

I just passed mine this way. My CO count was 0.00 barely passed the HC tho

Re: Need some smog tips

So it passed smog and I have been having my buddy drive it around this weekend to make sure it will make the 3 hour drive to the shipping port... He thinks it will make the drive no problem, but it will be easier if I can fix it here instead of waiting to order the parts when I get to England.

He is saying sometimes the CEL comes on randomly, and he just turns it off, and it it goes away... He also said sometimes it hesitates from a stop, but other times it is perfect. Also, it likes to crank for a bit before it starts up.

I'll try to get the CEL code and go from there... Where should I start off looking? I think my buddy said the CEL has something to do with the Ignition, but i'll verify.

I assume it could be a vacuum issue because of the hesitation and it hunting a bit at idle, so I will do a quick check, I just have the weekend to tinker before I drive it to the port.
