New front hubs, but an oddity...

OK... I've had some wheel shimmy at high speeds, and figured that a 20yr old truck without serviceable wheel bearings is probably due to have them replaced. So, today I picked up a pair.

One is stiff(ish). It spins, but not like #2 does. #2 is almost like it free spools. low effort to make spin.

Any problems that can be had by them not matching in resistance? Take them back or "good to go"?

i serious don't think you have problems with the one that takes more effort to spin, but i doubt the other one is as good as it is.
you won't feel any problem in resistcance while driving.
but the dust seal or seal is the one that makes it harder to spin.

but with an alky kit and throwing bleu flames or burning up the cat is the fast and the furious, just try to get a bearing that rolls really sweet. you might gain a 3hp..

I just figured it was a manufacturing change or supplier change. I dounted that there'd be much difference between the two, but the fates seem to look down on those that do without questioning.

Blue flames? LOL. Nope, but alky has me being a believer. ;) I did it (mostly) to be knock free @ 18-20psi. Why chance it when you can be sure?

After pulling the drivers side one off... ewwwwww. It was nasty. Leaked grease at some point, showed some heat discoloration (not sure if was "heat treated" or if the TY did on it's lonesome), and there is totally some side to side play.

Good times.

If one truly has more drag than the other would that make it pull that direction?

I thought about that... but then what happens if you replace only one side? You'd still get some variance. I'm sure, that in the overall scheme... it's not going to make a difference.

Re: New front hubs, but an oddity...

The pre-leoad of a hub type bearing is pre-set after the axle is tightened down. THE INNER RACES are designed to clamp together and that will determine the final pre-load. This is how the bearing works. It is two bearings squeezed together and it cant be determined off the vehicle. It will not cause a pull or any other side effects as long as the bearing assembly is the correct one for the Vehicle. In my shop i always use top quality parts and avoid the cut rate junk that is on the market today. Also several hub assemblies have been RE_DESIGNED by the after marker to make a better product than the OE.

DOH! I forgot about that. Good point.

No problem. By the way i like your fix for stripped Lower sway bar mounts. I do the same thing i drill all the way threw the A frame. Question?? Do you leave the slack DOWN or UP. I put the slack UP then cut off the excess. Is that what you do. Just wondering. Thanks.

I put the slack on the bottom side. That way I won't have super paranoid fears about the bolts somehow freaskishly tearing up the boot. ;)

No idea why the factory thought that those tiny bolts would hold.
