I've been researching notebooks/laptops. Many of the latest & greatest brands and models > 1 GHz have deleted the serial port in favor of wireless and firewire ports. Several HP models, however, seem to be bringing theirs back.

All HP Omnibook xe4000 and HP Pavilion ze5000 series notebooks have serial ports.

Some of the Pavilion ze4000 series have serial ports: ze4220, ze4240, ze4325

NOTE: ze1210, ze1230, ze1250, ze4210, ze4230 DO NOT have serial ports.

If eBay shopping, and you want to find out if a particular older model HP computer has a serial port, go to:

http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/prodCategory.jhtml?reg=nam&cc=us&pagetype=hppavilion84160&lc=en

Enter the computer name and the first letter of the model. (ie Pavilion z) That should get you a list of all the 'z' models numbers. Each will be a link to support information. Some will have spec sheets; for those that don't, select and download the *.pdf user manual. Pages will show port layouts.

Always remember, many people that sell computers on eBay don't even know what a serial port is.

For those of you that like to gamble, search for items from eBay seller 'chancedeals'. Be sure to read the page v e r y carefully.

No computers listed but one recently closed:

A lot of the Dell laptops still have serial ports...

I just got a Dell Inspiron 8500...

They have very competetive prices as well (assuming you are looking for a new laptop).

Actually, they're being replaced with USB, and FireWire sort of. Wireless is networking and totally separate, unless you're referring to the IR ports that tons of computers have had for years and never used...

FYI, I just got a new laptop at work. Compaq (HP) Presario 2100, 2.0GHz P4M, 512MB, 60GB, DVD/CD-RW, 100MB, 54G. Mmmmmm... Runs DM smooth as can be at 10/sec. Hundredfold improvement over my old P120...
