Went to the track today with a couple of SyTy folks, to try to puts some runs on the new motor. Got a couple of runs in before I had to leave for the day (2 1/2 hours for two runs sucks, BTW).

The first run was part comedy, part near-tragedy. I was watching the tree instead of my boost gauge, and left the line with 15 psi   . Truck literally turned sideways, and headed straight for the timing tree (I was in the right lane). Fortunately, I got off the gas and straighted it out before I hit anything -- got pretty close to the wall, though. Got back on it and ran a 14.4 @ 102. Pretty lousy, but at least nothing was damaged. Talk about pucker factor, though. Sheesh.

After about 75 minutes, I finally got to do a second run. This time, I watched the boost gauge and left the line with 6 psi. Had a lousy reaction time of 1.8 -- gotta grow more eyes so I can watch more than one thing at a time. Anyways, this time the truck squatted down, squealed the tires a little, and took off like never before. When it was all over, I had run a 12.41 @ 105.3. Boost was only 16 psi, and I was using 93 Octane pump gas (never got over to the track pumps to get some 104 :( ). 60-ft time was 1.75 seconds, and the 1/8 mile was 7.81 seconds. Of course, it probably would have helped if I'd remembered to put it in "D" instead of "OD".

So, I'm thinking that with more boost and some race gas, I might actually break into the 11s. Probably gonna have to wait until next year, though. I don't think I'll make it back to the track before this warm weather goes away for the winter.

It's a '93 Ty, white/white. The build is pretty close to what's appearing to become the standard SyTy "go-fast" recipe:
  • Stock block, .030 over, 4-bolt mains
    Comp 412 cam
Comp Pro Magnum 1.6 ratio roller rockers
    TRW pistons
    Eagle rods
Vortec heads, redrilled for old intake bolt pattern, with 2.05 intake and 1.6 exhaust valves.
Heads gasket-matched to the Felpro 1203 (??? it's whatever jwaller recommended) gaskets, and then given a slight bowl job.
Stock intake welded up to match the Vortecs and the gaskets, and then ported.
    50-lb injectors.
PTE PT52 turbo and downpipe kit.

Of course, there are some non-standard things, too:
  • CAS single-core A2A IC, with some small mods.
    Homemade cold air intake.
DMH electric exhaust valve (was closed for those runs, though).
    lots of time spent tuning.

I should also mention that my Ty has a full exhaust: functional catalytic converter, big muffler and ATR 3" piping; and that I did those runs with the dump valve closed -- I wanted to see what it would do on the street before I tried the strip-only stuff (open the dump and add race gas). The truck is also fully-equipped (ABS, A/C, etc), and full-interior -- nothing stripped or deleted.

Hey Rick! How's it going? How's the Sy doing? Haven't heard in a while. Any idea when it'll be running again? Need any help with it?

Hey Bill,

Congrats on the new times.

Ricks new engine is in the works right now. Over the winter Nolan and I are going to sprinkle our special dust on this one too.

Look for another quick canadian in the spring. :D
