Newbie looking for advice

I appologize if this is in the wrong section, but I dont have a specific question as far as driveline or engine tech.

This is my first Sy, and my first turbo motor. Ive dealt with suprchargers before but this is new territory.

Im looking for some more power. I also want to keep the truck in one piece.

What are the weak spots that need attention before modding? What are the typical mods for these?

I bought the truck with exhaust (stock manifolds) what looks like a homeade cold air intake which I want to change. The stock air to liquid intercooler was swapped for a front mount air to air, not sure if thats better or why it was done. Its got an ANS Performance turbo controller which lights up when switched on, but doesnt change boost AT ALL when I turn the dial. I read up on how it works and I can only assume its not hooked up right. There is also an MSD Ignition box on the truck.

Unfortunately the previous owner was not the one who modded it so he wasnt able to tell me anything that I couldnt already see. It seems to run good and will hold 11psi under WOT and has spiked to 14.

I welcome all suggestions, comments, concearns and clean jokes.

Re: Newbie looking for advice

there have been trucks in the 10's with stock manifolds so unless you have deep pockets you won't be touching headers for awhile..

here's a link to some recipe of mods that are pretty dated but you'll get the point. also has some manuals etc

Here's some more how-to write ups

Also a front mount air2air intercooler is what most upgrade and the ans boost controller if I remember right hooked up to your boost solenoid (located by the turbo) and is kind of dated technology as well.

Best thing to do... out side of searching this site to end would be to get into contact with a local syty owner that has data log capabilities.. have them hook up to your truck to see exactly what is wrong and have a look through your engine bay to help you identify possible issues etc because if your only hitting 11 psi of boost and sometimes spiking to 14 with upgraded exhuast then you have some issues to work out before you start getting into the throttle.
