No Oil Pressure

I tried priming my motor today, took out the spark plugs turned the engine over a few times, and the oil pressure gauge in the truck didn't move at all, i then took on the remote filter and there was no oil in it, and i noticed the there was a leak coming from the seal where the oil line sender bolts to the block, i had it torqued on well so i don't know why its not pushing oil up through the filter, it's a new build, the guy who built it knows what he's doing, anyone have any suggestions?

Re: No Oil Pressure

Well when you primed it obviously it didn't. Take the dist cap off, crank the motor, and make sure the rotor turns. Look down the dist hole and make sure the shaft for the oil pump is there. It takes quite a few turns of a priming tool to actually bring up oil pressure and you'll never see any, at least very little, pressure if the tool doesn't have a provision to block the dist passage. Regardless it should fill the filter.

Sorry, but is there oil in the pan?

Re: No Oil Pressure

i put about 4 quarts of oil in it, and checked the dipstick and there is lots of oil still in the bottom, so your saying the stock oil pressure gauge won't show pressure unless the truck is running? I did turn it over quite a few times, i think it should have put some oil in the filter, and the distributor is in correctly and it turns..

So your pump is turning, do you have A primming tool that you can put on the end of A drill?

The stock ga is inaccurate but if connected and functional should show pressure if it's there. As mentioned if you have a priming tool run it with a drill (clockwise) for 30 secs. If still no pressure you have a problem somewhere. Did you remove the dist and look to see if the oil pump drive is there?

Your gauge needle isn't on the back side of the needle stop by chance is it? Just s thought........................

Good point but he says his filter is dry which is weird. Somethin' ain't right somewhere.

When I helped my friend prime his 472 caddy engine, it took a good 3-4 minutes before we got any oil moving. We used an old distributor shaft with the teeth cut off in a BIG drill. Since you have the engine back in the truck, you *may* have to remove the oil filter to help get the oil pump primed. That's what we ended up doing on his engine. Our oil filter setup is worse because it sits so high.

Re: No Oil Pressure

Truck will start with no oil pressure but won't keep running without oil pressure as I understand our system.

Mike, I've had a drill on mine to prime the system with it in the truck without a problem. Removing the filter might do it actually. If the pump is new and was installed completely dry it just might make a difference. Unlikely but possible.

Hmm, isn't there a plug in the oil galley or distributor hole that if it's not re-installed, it will cause a no pressure situation?
Don W. IIRC, you had mentioned removing this plug before when you have the block cleaned. I bet it wasn't re-installed.

you should have oilpressure than, i once had and engine from a great engine builder that forgot to put the plug in., but if you prime it you get pressure. just when the engine is warm there is no oill going too the filter.

i think we need to know if this guy is using a priming tool. and i sure hope he's using one instead of cranking the engine with no oilpressure

Re: No Oil Pressure

also, if you don't have a priming tool,. try to stick a flatscrew driver in the place the dist used tp be. if you engange the oilpump shaft you will feel resistance when you turn it because of the oil compressing between the gears.

Re: No Oil Pressure

if whomever built your engine did not put any engine assembly lube in the oil pump it will take a while to prime the engine and sometimes will not prime the engine.

Re: No Oil Pressure

Fill the oil filter, and take off both valve covers. Get a good electric drill and a priming tool and have at it. It'll take a long time, but once you get sufficient oil flow out of the pushrods you should be pretty well primed. Using the starter won't work, a drill is the best bet.

Re: No Oil Pressure

im going to call my builder and find out all the little details and go buy a priming tool, this guy really knows his stuff so i doubt he forgot anything, this is his website http://www.aceautomotivemachine.com/lr.html, he has to build a twin turbo 4.3 all aluminum for another magazine soon..anyways ill give him a call and get some info

Re: No Oil Pressure

Does anyone have a picture of the gasket that goes inside the adaptor block on the engine for the oil coolers?

Re: No Oil Pressure

I'll get you one but that's not the problem. Unless something was installed incorrectly, but even then I wouldn't think that's it.

Here ya go...

Re: No Oil Pressure

Well i figured out why i had a leak from the oil adapter on the block, the o-ring seal seemed to be worn down, you can see the new one on the left is alot thicker than the original one i had, i got the gasket set at kragen for 3 bucks, #ES70016, i also rented a oil primer tool and the oil pump seems to be good, i took the oil adapter off the block on the turned the primer tool by hand and oil immediately started gushing out so im gonna prime the motor with the drill and see what happens.
