No Power???

Evening, I am a new Ty owner #0431 and love it. when I bought it, it needed some attention. I did a full tune up using all AC Delco parts (plugs gapped at .035), checked the timing (0 degrees) and checked full pressure (42 psi). I replaced the intake gasket and every vaccum line. We noticed the intake valley was very clean, it looked like it was brand new, so the previous owner did use Mobil 1. After all this it runs like a dog! I am new at this turbo thing so any one who could give some advice it would be greatly appreciated. If there is any other advice that would be cool too, Thanks!

Is it building boost? Did you check to be sure the Heat Exchanger pump is working? Becareful because running like a "dog" could be caused by a lot of detonation and spark retard.

Check to make sure you're developing full boost, do the "inner tube trick" to check for leaks as well. Other things to consider:

Do a compression test to see what kind of shape the cylinders are in

Check TV cable adjustment

Get or borrow DataMaster and watch for the evil known as Knock Retard

Make sure you have adequate fuel volume to go with the pressure

Tighten up the spark plug gap a little, some people prefer .028 or thereabout

Check the cat/exhaust system for restrictions causing excessive backpressure

Make sure you didnt use Platinum plugs

Any check engine light?

Was timing done by diconnecting the brown wire under the passenger side dashboard. Our trucks have a learning curve. The tune up procedure is on syty.org. Start with the( back track your steps) simple stuff. Then work your way forward.

After all repairs (replaced heater core) I let the natural disaster warm up to normal temp. I installed a 180 degree thermostat during the tune up. I popped the hood and gave it a few RPMs from the throttle body, keeping my eye on the waste gate and observed no movement but the boost gauge did show a boost ( I know the guage from the factory insn't that accurate but it is some thing). Is this normal or should it be moving? I will do my home work about the advice you guys suggested. Thanks for your reply, any gear heads in central Texas?

I don't think the wastegate will move at all with you just reving the truck up in park. Mine requires 15psi in order for it to move and I would imagine the stock one isn't too far off of that. Boost pressure is what opens it so I'm sure you're not building enough to do so with that method.

Besides, the wastegate actuator needs to see a certain about of boost before it even "opens" and allows that pressure to open the wastegate. Hope that makes sense. You might see a little wastegate flutter when release the low amount of "boost" you built up but that's about it

Cool! The truck came with a Pitbull catback and every thing else is stock to the best of my knowledge. The heat exchanger pump is hot wired and runs constantly. When I look into the heat exchanger itself I can see a small amount of movement and when the key is shut off you can hear the coolant inside the cooler stop circulating. A friend of mine is a better mechanic than me, put the typhhon on a smoke machine to look for vaccum leaks. We found the lower intake leaking around #3 & 6 cylinders and replaced all vaccum lines (except for turbo lines).

You shouldn't get any boost just from revving it in park. Maybe you don't have a catback?
Did you find the cylinder leaks after it started running like a dog?

What chip is in it? Is it a stock chip/tune? maybe it was tuned with those leaks in place so you need to start again.

Have you got Data Master? Can you quantify what you mean by running like a dog?

Low top end/ slow to accelerate, low boost, lag, late shifts etc?

We checked the timing today again and found it to be retarded so once we set the timing again and we test drove it. The power was restored but some how I have a rod knocking. $HIT!! Where can we go for a new crate motor that will fit our trucks? I don,t need one for the track but more of a daily driver with a little get up and go. Thanks for all your help and advice.
