Off-Idle hesitation

Last week I pulled my Sy out of storage (its been sitting for about a year and a half) and it ran terrible. It took 10-12 tries before it would start up. The idle was ok, but as soon as you gave it any gas it stuttered horribly. Driving up and down the street I couldn't get it to run above 2k rpm. So then I replaced the cap, rotor, and plug wires. I didn't replace the plugs (CR42TS's) because they only had about 100 miles on them and the 2 that I checked looked perfect.
After that I'd say the truck ran about 30% better, but it still took about a dozen attempts to start it and had a pretty bad off-idle misfire. So I bought a fuel filter, slapped it in there, and tried again. It fired up on the first crank :D but still had the same misfire :(
Then I drove it around a bit, bought some fuel injector cleaner, and filled it up with gas. While I was out, I noticed that most of the time when it hesitated, the tach would stay pretty much where I thought it should be, but other times it would bounce around. That had me thinking coil so I swapped that out. Now the tach doesn't bounce around, but the misfire is still there.
I'm not sure what I should try next. As it stands now, the truck idles fine and revs freely in neutral. In gear, it falls flat on its face if I give it more than 1/8-1/4 throttle when its below about 2k rpm. When I get it above 2k rpm, either by shifting manually or in drive, I can give it about half throttle before it does the same thing. The problem seems to be the same whether the engine has warmed up or not. My truck is 100% stock (well except for the new MSD wires and dist. cap).
I bought a 255 lph fuel pump, but I'm waiting for an empty tank before I tackle that one. Any other suggestions? Sorry about the long post, but I figure the details may help.

I have thought about that, but there was only about an eighth tank of old gas in it. When I changed the fuel filter it didn't smell bad. Since then I've filled it up, so any old gas in it would be pretty well diluted. Right?

Re: Off-Idle hesitation

I've been driving the truck on and off this week and the more I think about it, the more I suspect I've got a fuel supply issue. When I floor it and the engine hesitates, it doesn't usually backfire and the exhaust doesn't smell like there is fuel in it. I pulled the #1 plug this morning and it still looks good. I've got noisy injectors, but from what I've been reading thats pretty normal. I'd check the fuel pressure, but I don't have a gauge.

So tonight I'm going to change the fuel pump. I know its still working (I can hear it prime the lines if I turn the key on but don't start the engine), but I'm going to give it a shot anyway since I've got it. Also, it's still the original pump as far as I know so it should still have a pulsator on it, which have caused others problems.

Any other things to check out before I go tearing into my fuel tank? Now, if only I had my own lift to work on this thing with

Have you checked the FP at the rail? If it is good at idle and good at normal running speeds, then you will be wasting your efforts droping the tank to replace the pump. Of course you just wanted to put in an over size pump for later.

Re: Off-Idle hesitation

Did someone say fuel filter? If so I missed it. Also I hate to say it but check the little sock on the bottom of the fuel pump. Plugged with crud from the bad gas. BTW, IMHO a little bit of gas left in the tank will go bad faster than a lot. 1/8 tank? Not good. Again just my opinion.

Re: Off-Idle hesitation

I changed the pump last night and I think its fixed! After I got it all apart, I blew air through the pulsator and the seals were definitely junk. The pick up screen wasn't in great shape either. I put in the new 255 lph pump and a new screen and got rid of that pulsator. Changed the fuel filter again too just to be safe.

I only had enough gas to get me to the gas station so I didn't drive it around any last night. But this morning I filled it up and took the scenic route to work and gave it a good workout. ZERO hesitation.

So I guess with the clogged screen and blown pulsator I was getting enough fuel to maintain pressure at idle and low load, but it didn't have enough volume to keep up at higher loads.

Re: Off-Idle hesitation

It's in the fuel tank between the outlet of the pump itself and line to the outside. It looks like a miniature master cyl. I imagine the theory is to smooth the flow of fuel. I've never seen anyone recommend keeping it.

I've heard that it's suppose to quiet down the fuel pump noise.. but often causes more problems then good.

1992 Typhoon

Recently bought truck has been sitting 2 yrs. and would crank but not start. Replaced plugs, rotor, cap, leads, and fuel filter. Will only start with shot of brake cleaner, after warm will start on own. Afterwards it will idle although fluctuating 800-1200 rpm. It has a severe off idle stumble and is not drivable, but by feathering gas it will rev high and smooth, above 2000 rpm (with no load) it does not have this hesitation problem ??? Scanner shows no codes but timing advance is 24 deg. at idle??? When throttle is opened quickly off idle engine stumbles, advance dips breifly (fraction of a second) to 10 deg. and then up to about 34 deg. full advance and egine revs high. Throttle body and plenum cleaned. Vacuum lines inspected and replaced. Compression 150-160 psi all cyl. Removed exhaust to test but same. Any ideas ???
