Oil Pressure Drop...wtf

So a friends Ty I've done a lot of work to had an oil pressure scare yesterday. Truck has been driving perfect. Smooth and tight. (or as much as a syty can be), he was coming home from work and check guages light flickered and he saw the oil pressure drop to zero. He pulls over and goes to shut it down...and light is off, pressure is normal. He stops, looks it over, sees no oil drips or anything, starts it back up and drive it home. I look it over, run it, pressure is fine and normal.

WTF? Any insights?

Re: Oil Pressure Drop...wtf

Sounds like it might be a issue with the oil pressure sending unit or the gauge.I would change the oil & filter just to be safe. Keep an eye on it and let us know what happens.

Change the oil and filter just to be safe. Cut open the oil filter and check for anything out of the ordinary...I.e metal, bearing shavings.

Re: Oil Pressure Drop...wtf

Oil only has 500-700 miles on it. Easy enough to change again.

My initial thoughts was that its probably the sending unit acting up, but figured an extra opinion or 30 wouldn't hurt.

Distributor shaft.... should also affect running, I would think. Unless it broke precisely below the cam gear. And even then it wouldn't come back to making pressure again.....

drive down a bumpy road and see if it does it... maybe a broken/cracked pickup tube?

Mech. gauge is the way to go. I pull mine from the fitting just above the oil filter adapter. You may have to pull the wheel well but it's still easier that dealing with the factory sender location.

Re: Oil Pressure Drop...wtf

Only times I have had this problem was when my pick up tube fell off. Drain the oil and stick something in there to see if it is laying in the pan.

Re: Oil Pressure Drop...wtf

Not trying to hijack the thread but I have a similar issue. Typically my oil gauge stays at the bottom and doesn't rise. I changed the sending unit to no avail and there are no leaks and the truck doesn't burn oil. However, every once in a while the gauge will go to about the halfway point and I'm convinced that the boost comes on quicker and the truck is faster when the gauge is working. Is this possible? Where do I go from here?

Re: Oil Pressure Drop...wtf

Thanks for all the input guys. Except for that one occurance, that press has never dropped to 0 again. The guauge has a very coarse movement, and after looking everything over, its either the guage or sending unit. Will be replaceing with a stand alone guage in the pillar. Thanks guys.
