One piece.

From my understanding I thought you had to use a 1 piece rear main seal with a 1 piece block. To use a 2 peice you need to machine the block.

you can use an adaptor to run a 2 piece crank in a one piece block(but not the other way around), strength wise it makes no differance.

I've got the 5051 Bowtie block and I guess it's 2 piece from the factory. But U can do a little machining and bolt a one piece retainer on the back of the block. There's NO comparison ! Two piece is a real POS.

I have a GN and a TTA, and I am so F'ing sick on leaking oil onto garage floors all over the USA. Unfortunately on the 3.8 block, there isn't enuf extra length on the back end of the crank to do a 1-piece conversion like there is on Chevy blocks. Occasionally U can get a 2-POS to seal, but usually not. Some people will tell U differently, but they are FOS.

Correct me if im wrong.... Whats the purpose of buying a $2000+ crank when thats not the real problem? Wouldn't it be wiser to get a better block then a crank that you dont need? I thought oiling issues with the stock 4.3 were the reason for everyone eating a crank? Im rebuilding my motor and the bearing and journals were all f-ed up and this motor was rebuild about 2000 miles ago (previous owner got the shaft from the machine shop). Same thing in my 125,000 stock ty motor bearings were SHOT but the crank lived. My rebuild motor destroyed the crank but it wasnt from the crank being weak.

i personally dont see any problem putting a high end crank in stockblock with 4 bolt main conversion.

then again maybe he shouldnt... ya see so far no one but me and harry got a stock block into the 9's.

then again he might as well put that high end crank into a better block and be done with it if he wants to make some big power.

otherwise i recommend making sure the cylinder walls have some meat behind them and possibly filling the block and a midplate.

otherwise he may be the2nd person to find the power limits of a stock block.

i agree, I was under the same impression. In fact I just finished rebuilding a 97 4.3 cpi
motor this weekend. And.... one of the bearings was "SHOT".

Re: One Piece Or Two Piece

Is the same oil pan used for a 1 peice seal and a 2 peice seal or is there a difference where on the back of the pan near the seals?

Thanks,
-Matt

the rear seal on the two are different unless you use the adaptor. if you use the adaptor to put a 2 piece crank in a 1 piece block then you retain the 1 piece pan and pan gasket.

if you go true 2 piece crank and block then yes the seal is different. thats why RPM and others sell the different custom pans.

Re: One Piece Or Two Piece

i think the oil flow system on the stock ,motors is the crank and bearings main problem.I dont think the flow is good enough thats why on my new build i got the big oil system from turbo time
