One step forward, two steps back - downpipe and throttle issue

OK,

The headers and the downpipe are in contact due to a misalignment so I need a new downpipe which is surprising as they are both stock items. S***. How much for a 3" downpipe?

The good news is that the incessant ticking is gone and I found out why I had lousy spool up - every single damned gasket I had painstakingly cutout was blown - all 3 cylinders and the turbo manifold and the downpipe. What a pain I can tell you. If you ever plan to use gaskets, then use the metal ones. Don't waste your time with RTV silicone or with Mr GASKET. No good. So now it idles immaculately.....

Until I waited 5 minutes and got a code 15 so I'm checking the electrics. Then it would not start and I waited another 10 min when it took ages to start. Then again it idled brilliantly (I love that V6 rumble) but when I applied throttle it choked.

It sounds like a fuel issue to me, but I have only done one thing to the fuel lines - installed my fuel pressure sensor - would the air in that line cause those problems? It was 24" of -3 AN. Surely not. Any ideas?

The turbo lines that I got made are THE BUSINESS. Now I can remove and replace the turbo with so much more ease. I highly recommend them if you are considering doing any work with the turbo or manifolds.

I got my new shocks on and they look cool. Those plus the sway bar mean I have a much better ride. If you are on stockers still then get rid - they are knackered no doubt.

Hope you are all well guys, Merry Christmas.

Ok , heres what I can tell you about your gaskets. Frist off, if you are running the stock manifolds, you arent even supposed to be using gaskets. Its machined to fit perfect. I had this problem for about a year and everytime Ild replace one gasket another would go out. After working on a friends SY I realized, they dont come with gaskets at all. Dont use em.

Ditto. If you have a leak on the mounting flange, take it to a machine shop for a quick shave to true it up and then a very thin layer of Hi-Temp R.T.V. Thats it!

Re: One step forward, two steps back - downpipe and throttle issue

Thanks for the responses guys. I have thought about getting the heads machined but nowhere I know of does it, at least not near enough to make it practical.

The problem in the first place was that the heads were warped anyway. If the problem comes back then I will def go down that route but for the time being, the exhaust system sounds better than it ever has.

My concern now is the fuel/throttle issue and also my turbo spool up.

I have got a 20G on there with no other mods and it takes 3-4 secs to get up to full boost. I have a stall converter and DM and Tunerpro but a,m yet to install the SC or use Tunerpro.

Is there any other reason why my turbo would be so slow?

Finally, the oil pan was EMPTY. I only filled it up about 3 months ago and was getting agood pressure on the oil pressure gauge. Why am I losing so much oil. There is a bit of blue smoke on start but I thought that was normal - surely I can't be burning that much oil.

Any ideas? And thanks again for your input!

The blue smoke on start up is pretty much valve guides. When you deside to work on the heads, have the guides replaced. It's been a very long time since I've worked on a motor but Brass guides used to be king. Anyhow, this should only account for like a quart of oil every 3 months and not the whole pan. I would think with that kind of oil loss, you would see signs in you drive way or a fog trail behind the truck going down the road. The only thing I can think of ATM is crawling under the truck and look for signs of a leak or putting a big pice of card board under the truck at night. You can get an idea where the oil is comming from by where it drops on the card board. Now being Turbocharged, you could be burning it up in the turbo but I would think you would be foging everyone out if it was that bad. Also, make sure you let the turbocharger cool down a little if you get on it. I mean let the truck idle a minute before killing it if you just ran it hard.

I think I will try the cardboard trick next week. A friend is in Afghanistan so I am going to use his car while he is away and put mine on stands and do some stuff to it.

Anyone know what the fuel/throttle problem might be though? That has me worried. I have never had it before.
