I have a overheating problem,,,,even with a 160 degree thermo my typhoon is getting so hot that it stumbles while stopped....not getting into the red but I know its way to hot....what else can I do to get temps down ....????

The thermostat is brand new and is opening and closing because I see the variation in temps up and down.....Water pump is brand new....hoses are brand new....mabye a fan or clutch problem...??????

thanks in advance...

what have you done?

are you having to add water?

how hot is it outside?

what rad/fan setup are you using?

is it with AC on or off?

just cause you see the temp going up and down doesn't mean it is working properly. I put a thermostat in my Camaro and I had the same prob, come to find out the stat wasn't opening/closing all he way. Pull it out and put it in a pan on the stove, then you can tell if it is opening all he way. i guess mine was just a freak occurance, bought a new one and problem solved :-?

I have to ask the same ?s as John. There are alot of things that could be bad. Fan clutch, thermostat, water pump, even the cap can cause high temps.
With the really high temps at idle I would suspect the fan clutch. Any way about it you need to get it fixed. How high has the stock temp needle got? The reason I ask that is, on mine if the needle is on the 1st quarter mark the Diacom shows around 200 deg. Stock guages suck. If yours is getting up around the 3/4 mark it may be really HOT.

I agree. My gauge matches up to DataMaster fairly well as to hot/cold differences, except that my gauge is 40 degrees (1/4) cooler than actual. The stock gauge will tell me if it's especially hot or cold, but the actual number that the gauge reads is WAY off.

not having to add water...stock fan and clutch, 160 dregree thermostat brand new....brand new stock water pump....guage reads just under the 1/2 way point when I know its too hot.....usually at idle in traffic not heavy stop and go though.....my o2 readings get really lean and truck stumbles around until temps come down....usually when ac is running....temp in IL have been in upper 90's ....

thanks for the suggestions....

Thought you had to upgrade the ECM for the 160 thermo to work properly? Stock ECM won't notice this upgrade so I'm told.

thermostat is a mechanical thing wich opens when reaching certain temprature, with a 160 with 160(completly open).

your tempature sender will just read the temprature,

So why would somebody upgrade the ECM?
it has nothing to do with it in my opinium.

Well, the stock chip is designed around the engine operating at a certain temperature. Using a 160 will throw this off some, but the reduction in knock due to lower temps far outweighs the slight (if even noticeable) issues from the calibration being off. A custom chip would give the best results, but you shouldn't have any problems with a stock chip. Again, it's the programming in the MEMCAL, not anything with the ECM itself (if there is anything noticeable at all).

Did you ask for a syty water pump....I knew of someone that got a reverse flow (from what our's is and had the same problem). I know of others that took off their AC and rerouted the belt and spun the water pump backwards. It cooled, but very radical in temps.

Yeah, the serpentine belt makes it "reverse" from a regular V8 water pump. But it should be the same as any early 4.3L V6 S-truck with A/C...
