Piston or rings? blowby

Looks like after doing some hard test runs the other night ive got some blowby goin on. Got a lot coming from the breather and i can feel it half a ft away from the filler cap when open. Didnt start happening until last night after those runs. i thought i was being safe by meticulously looking at tuner pro during and after each frun for knock and a/f ratio, but unfortunately it looks as if my knock sensor isnt reading anything. How can i test to see which piston/ring it is? or if thats even my problem? Thanks.

Compression Test on each cylinder. I would guess #3. It seems to be prone to damage.:2cents:

Re: Piston or rings? blowby

No its a motor from a semi low mileage typhoon. Do i do compression or leakdown? And is it possible the head on that cylinder(s) is bad too? Also is it possible to remove/install the psiton/rod without removing the head? I can access the oil pan easily with no front driveshaft in right now.

Re: Piston or rings? blowby

Whats the main cause? Knock? lean a/f? and i hope if its more than one they are on the same side so i dont have to mess with both heads. Then again if either head is damaged im just going to go vortec.

Compression test.

You have something like this going on:

The cylinder head should be allright. It will have to be removed anyway.

Re: Piston or rings? blowby

all it takes is a little hole. going lean will cause it or detonation. i had a piece melted out smaller than a pea and my old motor would barely start. it also built some pressure in the block. and you just got that running didn't you. might want to have your injectors and fuel system checked before you drop another motor in. just because your overall afr is right doesn't mean you don't have a real lean cylinder. if you need help looking for another cheap motor let me know, there are a couple l35 motors in my local pick and pull.

Re: Piston or rings? blowby

I'll let you know if i need help fnding another one, but right now selling it is looking like the best option on the table. I'm going to college in a few months and will be moving to san marcos. I don't think this is going to help me save money much.

okay. i know it's like 125 plus 25 core for a complete engine and 1 dollar a day for warrenty. maybe you could store it while you're in college.
