Re: plasti dip the cladding?

I did try Turtle Wax's "Black Box" wash and wax. The result was this...

But after a few weeks it was back to being blotchy and looking sun beaten again. :(

To be fair I only got 1 coat on before the rain rolled in that day. And now that its getting warm again, I'm going to hit it again. Repeatedly. And to see if I can save time, I'm thinking of just taking all of the cladding off and power buffing it with the black wax stuff. And putting several coats on. Sounds like 5-6 ought to do...

Guess I'll try that before the plastic dip. I've met a few folks who have dipped their entire car and they seem to really like it. And so far i've heard it holds up well when its done correctly. But its always been a drive way princess/show car thats had it done. I've never seen it done to a scooby that plays in the dirt. Guess that should tell me something, eh? :rotf:

If you're going to go through the trouble of taking it off, just have it painted and be done with it.

I personally don't put any silicon dressing on my cladding, it get absorbed into the plastic and years of build up will make it nearly impossible to paint.

Re: plasti dip the cladding?

OK, ya'll have convinced me. I wont do the plasti-dip. I'll make it a point to just keep polishing it with the black stuff till i've got several layers on. And I have to take the cladding off anyway. I'm replacing both front fenders because they've rusted out so much they wont even hold the cladding anymore. And there's literally a line of rust around the bottom edge of this truck under the cladding. I swear this thing sat in a field for a few years. I've got some of this stuff thats suppose to stop rust that I want to go around and dab everything with. And then hit it with some rattle can. Going use the cladding to hide it. :(

Thats just a temp fix for now. Goal one is to stop the rust from spreading any more if i can. Ultimately I want to get the whole truck re-painted and all of that crap cut off and replaced. Which is going to cost an arm and a leg. Maybe more.

I feel like all i'm doing with this poor thing is damage control atm. Tho I am making progress. If all goes well it'll be drivable again by the end of the month. First time she's moved since September.

Re: plasti dip the cladding?

if you gonna take all the cladding off anyway, painting wouldnt be that expensive. and dont you need to spray the front fenders anyway since you gonna replace them?

While you are at it, you might as well spray the whole truck...
but if you gonna do that, and take the fenders off anyway, lifting the body is a piece of cake..

Don't use wax on the cladding. You used automotive paint wax on the cladding I'm assuming, and yeah that's going to do little to nothing. Don't try and 'buff' it with the black wax either, you will get the same results or worse damage the cladding. For trying black wax you might as well try black shoe polish. And save time by removing the cladding, hahaha! Again, using black box wax on your cladding is just throwing your time away.

Get 'back to black', its a product designed for black plastic, which wax is not.

BTW, did you even read my previous comment? One, check out dip your car.com for guys dipping regular daily drivers, and check out Adams products or zaino for cladding repair products.

All oem cladding was painted. The paint is thin. I polished my cladding and that helps. I have some fasding on the top side. I just wax it and deal with. One of these I repaint my cladding the oem matte black.

Back to black is silicon product that is absorbed into the cladding make it difficult to correctly paint the cladding. I personally not use any plastic product on my cladding. I read too many horror stories about painting cladding.

Back to black did make my cladding look great before I got it painted. That being said my painter did hate me when he had to prep the cladding. He still got it and he said it wasn't absolutely horrible, but it does make it harder to prep for paint. I would still use back to black in the meantime and deal with removing it when it eventually comes time to paint it. :2cents:

Ah, and now i understand what happened. Didnt even realize that stuff wouldn't work on plastic. Well, honestly I thought there was still enough paint on the plastic for it to work. Guess not. I found the back to black trim treatment you're talking about. And amazon mentioned this: http://www.amazon.com/Forever-Black-Bumper-Trim-Dye/dp/B000FOIJXQ as one of the recommended items. Not sure about that one since its just a dye. Might as well just repaint them, i think.

And as for taking the cladding off, is it really that hard? The two front fender pieces are already falling off. Plus I need to replace the side skirt on the passenger side anyway. It cracked in half and fell off. (I'm not kidding when I said this thing was unloved :(). Figured I might as well take all of it off. Also its already been taken completely off before because they guy who sold it to me had pictures of the rust under the rear end with no cladding in place.

And I did look at the dipyourcar site. It does look promising and it does support my original idea. I think I'm going to try this back to black trim polish first and see how that goes.

Re: plasti dip the cladding?

Oh and yes, I am replacing the fenders and they are getting painted. I did it before on my blazer because of the same damn rust issues (god damn GM...). Took me a three day weekend to swap both fenders. And that was when i was in high school and went in blind and having never done anything that complicated on a car before. So I feel like it would just take me a very long day now. Maybe 2.

Fenders plus paint will only run me ~$500. I'm going to take them to the shop first and then wrap them in tape as i install them to avoid chips and scratches. Shouldn't be too bad of a paint match since one of the recent owners gave it a bumper to bumper maaco splash. so its still very shinny, except in the few places its chipped and the OEM paint is showing in all of its faded glory. Whole truck is one massive repair after another :shoot: Dunno why I love it so much.
