Pulling my propshaft off question?

Hey guys, thank you so much for your info on helping me decide on the gilbert propshaft. Ok, question. Can I pull my stock propshaft off, and run the truck without it, until I get the gilbert, so to prevent any possiblity of the stock breaking? Further, will I be able to still flog my truck without the propshaft in place, and will 100% of the power to the rear? Is there any trick I need to know in doing this? I ask because there is a seal up in the front, and with the shaft out, that leaves a hole there, not good. Do I break apart the joint, and put that piece back on to fill the hole or what? Thanks

I wouldn't drive it much without the propshaft in place.Some ppl woould.
If you do,you won't be able to give it much throttle at all without lighting the tires up.

I took the front propshaft out for about 300-500 miles will no ill effects... I even did a burn out and could light up the ass end very easily. The stock prop shaft unbolts from the front dif with the torx bolts, the yolk will still be in there!

The thing is just gonna spin like mad if you flog it... enough to make it unsafe in the rain.. read spinny spinny in 2 and sometimes third

dont forget to apply your parking break, it will roll away w/o the propshaft

I drove my truck 800 miles without the prop shaft in it, out of necessity. It will drive ok as long as you don't get into the gas too heavy. It will go sideways on you if you floor it in 1st or if you floor it from a roll and it shifts into 2nd. And be careful with the gas when going around corners.

Also, my driveway slopes down at about 10* and the tranny held the truck in place on just the park selection and no ebrake.

Just to be clear on this, remove the entire prop shaft. Don't just unbolt one end of it or you will do damage to the shaft, tranny housing and truck body.

I'll just go ahead and confirm that the truck won't go anywhere if it's in Park without the e-brake. I do recommend using it of course. I drove mine for about 500 miles without the propshaft and the only problem I had was traction. Be careful because these guys aren't lying. It will light them up from a first gear roll well into second when it's DRY out.

Has anyone you know of ever had issue with the transfer case, just running the rear shaft? I don't want to do more damage than good, but I also don't want to risk breaking the front until I get the replacement. Vote,....Should I pull the front or leave it and hope until I get Mr. Gilbert? My boot is torn badly on the front, and has been like that for years I"m sure. I just got the thing, and it came from Hawaii.

If the boot is torn, then the joint will disintegrate very quickly. I am talking about within 100 miles you will hear and feel vibration from it. At that point, if you keep driving on it, the joint will continue to disintegrate. If you want an idea of what can happen if you drive on it with a torn boot then read my post on driving my truck from Colorado Springs to Sacramento California. When I left CO Springs, the boot was ok and there was no grease anywhere that I could see. By the time I was at the UT boarder, the vibration set in. By the time I made it to Salt Lake, the drive shaft broke out of the CV joint housing and took out my gear selector cable.

Either fix the torn boot or pull the shaft out. Don't drive on it.

Yeah just pull the shaft. Mine was pretty bad vibration wise due to the boot so I pulled it out. I have heard conflicting opinions on pulling the shaft out but I haven't had any problems since putting my Gilbert on. Just don't get on it too often and also I have heard it's best to change the fluid in the transfer case as soon as you can.

Just a FYI. I drove around with no propshaft and broke my tranny (twisted the input shaft),Loeryder dynoed his with no propshaft and wasted the transfercase.These may be coincedences,but if I were you I'd rather be safe than sorry. :2cents:

There were quite a few cases in history of guy's trucks rolling into the street overnight after removing the propshaft. Now if it was due to a worn or failing xfer case I dont know... but I dont think I'd chance it. should be using your ebrake when parked anyway...

I drove my sy for a little short of 6 months without a front propshaft daily.. of course I babied the hell out of it after seeing how out of control it gets once the boost comes on.

I'd say don't drive it until you get the new shaft installed just to be on the safe side..

I've been driving a torn boot front shaft for around 26 months and it saw about 22,000 miles before it snapped. I was VERY lucky that it broke from a stoplight lefthand turn just as I began to hit the gas. It still put four dents into the tranny tunnel(against my right ankle) but managed to miss the cable or damage the t-case etc. Very lucky here !
Anyway.......stuck another one in I bought off ebay four months ago and ALL of my irritating vibrations,noises,ticking etc. are of course gone.
But my point is......drive with it removed and save CERTAIN damages instead of pushing the envelope like my dumba$$ did.
I can't believe it didn't beat more stuff up ?
BTW.....it didn't break at the boot joint....it broke at the first UJ and snapped the surround cage ear off.
I pulled over and loosely strapped the remaining shaft ( collapsed) up out of the way and drove 15 mph home to swap it out.
