rebuild questions...

Okay, I've been searching for several days, and decided i need to ask. My goal IS a 10 second truck. i'm not going for a world record, but i run with the big boys here and a slow car is mid 11's, and i'd like to keep up ;)

I'd like to start motor work soon, and have it back up and running in a month or so. Most time consuming thing wuold be block work. My list is, Splayed 4 bolt mains, Eagle rods, JE pistons, the 415 cam, worked 98+ vortechs, Modified stock upper/lower intake (is the TB something that needs addressed?), ported exhaust manifolds, PTE63 turbo @ 25+ psi, 50# injectors, alky, also a 3200 stall/TH400 trans. also will be coating the pistons, exhaust ports, and bottom of the intake

1. A guy i work with has a 4.3 short block from a TBI 92 S truck that i can have for free if i just go pick it up, would i be better off to have this rebuilt or to rebuild the Sy block/crank thats in the truck now? (EDIT: speaking convience wise. is/should this be comparable to the block/crank thats in the truck? it'd be much more convient if i could just build this, then mod intake, and swap everthing over to the waiting block, and the off the factory long block.) is there a major difference in the different cranks strength wise? (reffering to the 4.3 "holy grail" article)

2. Can/should this motor be balanced internaly?

3. will roller rockers fit under stock vortech valve covers? if not what is reccommended, stock or somthing aftermarket? also reuse the factory lifters or should they be replaced? going to do hardened pushrods and better springs regardless.

and finaly, if i decide to run around with drag radials on all 4 corners, is there a major weak link besides the front driveshaft i should address? I see hoovers are running stock rear (assuming with shafts and a better posi?) what about the front axel/outer shafts?

Thanks in advance guys

Re: rebuild questions...

IMO if you want to go 10's thats not that tough. You will end up spending big $$ getting the block machined but it can work. A regular block will work for this endevour aslong is its a 1 piece rear main seal. I dont know if you can convert to internal balancing from external balancing. I dont think that you can fit roller rockers under stock valve covers, even vortecs. RPM makes some bitchin sweet valve covers and I think CKEITH is doing a GP on some too. I will be using COMP 1.6 ratio rollers on my build. With the 415 cam kit if you get the "K" kit it comes with ligfters and pushrods. For your weakest link I dont think you have to worry. You might think about the 4L80E trans tho. Moser makes rear axels for our trucks, I think I am gonna pick up a set of them to just insure my rear end.

Re: rebuild questions...

I think you'll run out of injecter with only 50#ers and 25psi...assuming you are using a decent size turbo.

Re: rebuild questions...

aight, I'm going with the PTE-SyTy-63, move up to 65# injectors as well. Alky is in and workin on tuning it next few days.

I'm goin to go with the TH400 mainly because of cost, the extra money for the controler etc to swap in a 4l80 isn't in the cards right now. may be a future upgrade along with a fast efi system.

Machine work? lol hell that was one of the least of my worries, 120 to bore/hone the block, 250 to line bore/4bolt it for splayed mains, and 168 to turn/balance the crank. i've got several friends that reffered me to this guy, and there motors are still together so his work must be pretty good lol. I thought it was kinda a decent price myself.

I did lie a little bit though, forgot my sister's wedding is this weekend, gonna have to postpone the machine work till next week... think she'd be pissed if i skiped it to work on the truck?

Re: rebuild questions...

Ditch the 415 cam. Go with 422 for 10's. It will really let your vortec's breath.

Roller Rockers DONT fit under the plastic Vortec Valve Covers (At least my Crane Rollers dont)
