Smokin @ idle (sometimes)

Hi, I'm new, don't kill me.

My Ty is smokin bluish, sometimes more white, smoke, at idle- not all the time, only once in a while. I can stop at a light and see a cloud of blue coming out, then if I hit the accelerator, it usually stops.

Any ideas? Seems like something is sticking...

Valve guide seals, rings are starting to go, do a compression test and it will tell the truth if it's the rings, could be turbo seal also!

Compression check was strong in all cylinders, so possibly turbo seal, so does it need a complete turbo rebuild? It was supposed to have been done 5000 miles ago when it got the new engine from McCoy installed.

If I do need it rebuilt, whats the best solution for it these days?

Now the smoking is every time I come to a light- or as in todays fun situation- at the car line at my sons school.

It doesn't smoke right away- it takes about 15 seconds, and then it starts pouring out. Hit the gas, bring up the revs, and it stops. Wait a little longer at idle, it will start again.

Any ideas what I'm looking at? Thanks.

Sounds exactly like my problem. My exhaust side seals on my turbo went bad, causing a horrible smoking problem at idle like so bad people rolled there windows up next to me lol, but soon as I drive it goes away. Not sure on a stock turbo if you have one, but on my Pte I got a rebuild kit for 75 bucks from eBay and was actually very easy to do. Just keep everything clean and have patience and keep it all organized

Thanks, I'll start looking for something like that for mine. I assume its stock, but the truck was built up a little, so will double check that.

Same problem- exactly the same- its was at my kids school in the car pick up line yesterday- the kids were scrambling like a bomb had gone off. They'll probably start calling my son Smokey or some crap now...

not to dig up old threads but glad I saw this... I own this typhoon now and it still has this problem. Compression check was good, would it be better to get a turbo rebuild kit and replace the seals or have a turbo shop (there's a local one here in Memphis) do it? Figured I'd check before doing one or the other. Here's the local place just incase someone has a horror story.

My turbo smokes a little after idling for a about 10 minutes because it has too high of oil pressure for the aftermarket ball bearin turbo I have. One thing I notice is that it sometimes has oil on the turbo exhaust housing. I think a turbo with a bad oil seal would also have a wet exhaust housing.

I just sent my turbo to PTE yesterday to have new seals put in. It started off with the smoking at idle. Ended up smoking a lot all the time. And it had a lot of oil in the exhaust housing. I think the cause may be the hole I drilled in the oil pan not being large enough. I moved the fitting on the oil pan. I'm in the process on removing the oil pan on the truck right now.

After having the issue with the oil seals. I did a little research. The turbo oil return needs to be a min. of 5/8" ID. It needs to be as straight as possible drop from the turbo to the oil pan. Try not to use any 90 deg. fittings.

I'm going to be pulling the engine here soon to clean everything up and re-spray the engine bay. Trying to get everything good before moving to Virginia beach and not having the time and space to work on it like I do in memphis. I'll do a build thread when I do, also swapping it over to fast xfi as we speak and trying to figure out if I can put the touch screen in somewhere without it looking stupid. I'm going to pull the turbo and let turbochargers inc mess with it when I pull the engine.

Had the problem one time and found the oil was a little over full, causing the turbo oil drain line to back up and not let the oil drain out properly. I changed the oil and filled to full line and it stopped the smoking at idle.
