so, how much are the vortec heads really worth?

i know i don't have the vortec heads, mine are casting #14091768, so how much more can the vortecs really make? especially if these heads are worked a bit. i think these are the 1.94 heads but maybe one of you guys could confirm or reject that for me, please.

I bought a set used and stripped for $100. I didn't mind since I'll be putting all new guts and guides in 'em.

really, they can make at least 100 more horses. maybe more. depends on how hard you want to push it.

you can do stockers for as little as ~500. but if you want all that 100 hp you will need to spend around 2500. that gets you some worked over heads with big valves, ported with a new custom cam and ported and welded lower intake to match.

So John what would you estimate HP wise you get for spending $500 on your stock heads, and if i'm interpreting this correctly your saying you can accomplish as much with stocks worked over as L35 and Vortec's???

when I said stockers I was refereing to stock vortec's.

what happens to reliability if you spend that $2500? Are they more delicate?

I want a fast car that I drive occasiaonally, but is still roadworthy....

there should be no change in reliablity,just have someone like john or js or turbo time or mike lee do the intake mod and make sure u do your gaskets and seal bolts correct and u should be all good,as far as drviabilty my build on my truck runs and drives around better than it ever did stock

I would have to imagine that if your running a decent sized turbo setup then worked over set of vortecs would benefit you some.. but if your running stock then this is a waste of time?

Ive got a Vortec 4300 in my 2000 xtreme with a few mods and that thing has some power. I can only imagine how much nicer the ty would run with some Vortecs with the stock turbo setup, from what ive learned the principals of the head shape is way more efficiant. If ya got the cash go for it. with the little extra cost over the L35s id do the swap and mod the intake manifold IMOO

def u can do a vortech mod cheap ,i mean u can leave the stock valves etc in them ,the gains are def worth it ,but the machine work for valves rockers guides and the intake mod is were the money comes in

nope it's not a waste. vortec's will not detonate like stock. you can run more timing and you get a boost in your compression ratio. all equal more power no matter what turbo you have.
