Hi!
I smoged my car today hmmmm everything is fine (emissions etc.) B U T my EGR stays shut! Since I don't know WHAT my custom chip from Switzerland does ... I could need a stock chip or get some tips how to fix this ONE AND ONLY problem I had to pass.
btw hard wired IC pump, 160 thermo in, 9" open cone filter, chip which I drive every day, bleeder valve ... sh*t failed because of the f*cking EGR
everythink else was fine!

How did they determine that it stays shut? Ithink it is suppose to be shut during the test. They can't put it on the rollers so it is just a tailpipe check. The tech I had just reached in after the test and made sure the EGR valve moved when he pressed on the inside of the valve. EGR only opens when the vehicle is moving and light throttle.

My truck has many mods and a Hypertech and has had no problmes passing. My truck is due in May. New proceudres in place?

EGR
He checked with vacuum at the EGR itself and with part throttle and no load it stayed shut.
He "advised" me to sit in the car, put it in drive and throttle "a little bit" and it still stayed shut.
He checked the vacuum at the MAP --> OK
This MOFO had no idea what I Typhoon is, at least I was able to understand his "English".
I guess I can tell him what I want - he wont believe me. My emission itself are ... brilliant.
Maybe I take a day of and go to Mike... .

Smog in CA and elsewhere

Smog in CA and elsewhere

So what happens if U R using the Late Vortec heads ? I heard they have no EGR valve
passoges. However, I guess the EGR mounts to the Intake, so at least there is an EGR sitting there. I thought I heard a post about an exte3rnal EGR that we can install ?

Same thing w my GN w the Champion Al heads. I have a valve mounted, but no head passages. Do U think U can pass Smog w this kind of a setup ?

I sure hope I don't have to change heads everytime I want to pass Smog.

Beside getting Mike L on the phone tomorrow, I have an additional question:
HOW has a smog only tester to test the EGR function?
Anybody around with a smog-test license?
He hooked up whatever vacuum device and measured pressure, he did NOT apply any pressure.
Perhaps I can talk into him that if this s*cker moves it's OK... .

OK, I just checked this on my truck with DM and putting it in Drive and applying the throttle does open the EGR. Hmmmm, works different than on my Z28. You need about 1500 rpm though, if it is just a little, say 1000 rpm, it won't open. :(

You can do the test again just don't run over your helper. Put it in drive and rev it to 1500 rpm and have your helper look at the back of the EGR valve and see if it moves. If it does, then all is well. :)

If nothing then I would check the following.

Engine off

Disconnect the vac line from the EGR valve and connect a vac pump to the EGR. Apply some vac and you should be able to see if the EGR opens and it should hold vacuum. It may leak a little but it should hold vacuum.

Start engine

If you start the engine with the EGR still connected to the vac pump and apply some vacuum to the EGR, the idle should get rough or engine will stall. If it does this then the EGR valve itself is good.

Engine off

Check your lines to the EGR valve and solenoid to make sure they are good. If in doubt, replace.

There are some other checks for the solenoid. Try this first and see if you find a problem.

THANKS

We did not build up boost beyond 1500 RP/M and he was not standing in front of the truck (I would have ran over him "unintentional" :fist: ).
Sure my truck stalled with disconnected vac. lines, beside this it's running "very" well and I just talked to Brian F (hiwinds), you could take a deep breath ut of my tailpipe - that clean!!! (sounds like I give something on this ---> nope!)

GM TURBO

Sell Out
I don't know about this however it might be something....

If he has EGR disabled on his chip....would this keep the EGR from opening and closing?
