G'Day;

Could need some help, my starter wants to go south. Not bad, 87kmls self-made hot shot relay since day two and still the first one.
Today "click, click" (cold engine), thank God that I had my big MagLite with me to hit it hard...
Where should I go, need a reliable drop in/bolt on and read a lot about gear reduction, mini starters etc.. nothing fancy but good working.
Starter session this Sat. at my house, cold beer and sodas free - LOL.

I highly recommend the lighter, smaller Mini Starters. I think they R even better starters. Got a GM Reman on my GN.

I have researched this pretty thoroughly in the last few months, and I'm going w the CVR Protorque mini-starter # 5323 from Jegs. There have been many posts in the last year or so, so U may want to Search if U want to rehash it all. A few Mail order houses have it cheaper and those R in the annals.

I am about to order right now and my only question is whether to go for the heavier duty model - the 5323-M for another $50. or so. If there is no downside, I'll go that way. I can Overkill w the best of them !

Well if I wanted the best possible longest lasting starter I would go with a nippendenso style. They usually outlast the vehicle they are on but I would say they are the most expensive. If you wanted a decent starter but not the best I would go with the gm style mini starter. That is what I currently have I would have the denso but we had the gm laying around. The gm is used in many of the newer trucks but not the new engine. So if I went to a parts store I would say I have a '98 Tahoe 4wd and then look at the starter and it should be quite a bit smaller and gear reduction with permanent magnets making issues with heat nonexistant. I am not sure how much they would cost from a parts store but you would have to return the core later and try and make sure they don't notice you gave them the wrong one back. I would ask Lynn Brown where he found the nippendenso style for $125 or so because that is a great price and you probably would spend like 10-25 less for the gm style.
The nippendenso starters cvr sells and I believe summit sells them also they look really weird and the bolt holes are not staggered but they bolt up.
I do not like the hitachi style which are csi brand and similar, my dad has seen many of they go bad.
PWM-9200 That is the part # for powermaster gm style starter so you know what it looks like.
I hope that will help you out and with any of these starters you should not have to worry about doing the remote solenoid or anything like that. Good luck and feel free to ask more questions.

Oh and the best part about these starters is there ease of install since they are so much smaller.

You are right on the CSI brand. I had one. Lasted 6 months and quit. Jegs had offered a lifetime warranty when I bought one. When I called them, they wanted to mail me a solenoid with me paying shipping. Some lifetime warranty. It makes a nice $289 paperweight.

I went with Sy#892's tip.... worked out well, there where suspicious when I brought the started back since there was NO Tahoe sitting outside.. I offered them to look underneath the car but ....
Paid $129, so not too bad.

I don't take this personal rockvillespeed but if I go to GM and ask for a starter for a 92 Typhoon and they quote 174 + tax and I get a 4.3 Jimmy starter for 102 + tax at the same dealer I ask myself what BS that is!

if someone wants something - great - if not, great.
i come here for my interest in my syclone, and to learn.
i have more then enough to keep me busy - i reufse internet/mail order daily - unless it's a list member or existing customer who moved out of town.
and i'd not do business with you.
i'm honest - if i find a customer isnt, he's invited not to come back.
i've done it many times before; dont doubt it'll happen again.
what u did is theft - period.
i rather doubt anyone would disagree - and if someone has a problem with what i said, i, as stated abpve, woud not take his money.

Helfmann glad I could be of some help. So how was the install of the starter? Did you return the core the same day? I am suprised they even noticed, at my work they look and see if there is something in the box if there is they give us the credit. Hell we even went bowling with this saturn alternator and mangled the hell out of it and they gave us the core.
The hitachi seem to be hit or miss with most being junk, I think myclone has that style for over 2 years or something and it still works for him. I would rather buy something that I know will work great for a long time.
As far a ripping of the parts store I don't see that what I see is they are making $100 on a $30 starter thats what I see. Only way I could see it being a problem is if everyone in the world did it the 2 or 3 people doing it won't 'cause a problem. Hell those starter cost $75 brand new from gm then they mark it up to like $200, or you can get a rebuilt for $50 and they will charge $130 sorry over double the cost is not a way to make a profit that is price gouging.
Thats all I have to say about that I could care less if you won't let me buy parts from you I have plenty of other people to go to Good Day Sir.

Check again Ed I think you have a cvr. That is the better style go look through your books and get a pic of both there is a big difference in appearance.
Then again if you have a csi maybe you will get one of the good ones :wink:

I hope so. My CSI smoked my alternator when it went south. Smoke was physically coming out of the alternator from the back where you can see the windings through the housing. That powermaster starter you listed looks EXACTLY like the CSI. Maybe they are different despite the housing.
