@ all the wrenching guys.

Does the Sy box fit a Ty?
I don't wanna know about ratios etc. just from it's
shape etc. is it the same part using the same bolts
in the same locations?

I can get a Sy box and would like to have it converted to quick ratio
and use it in my Ty.

thnx in advance.

Now that the point seems relevant, could someone verify for me that the Syclone steering box is already a quicker ratio that the Typhoon?

Someone can chime in to clarify the meaning of these numbers:

steering (from http://www.syty.org/old/brochure-spec.html):
Typhoon Fixed power, 17.5:1
Syclone Variable power, 16/13:1
Sonoma GT Variable power, 15/13:1

Thanks.

The lower the # the quicker the ratio 16/13:1 means the steering shaft has to spin 16/13 times to 1 turn of the steering wheel.

I think you've got that backwards. If one steering wheel turn on a Sy spun it 16 times, and one turn of a Typhoon steering wheel turned the shaft spun it 17.5 times, the Ty would actually be quicker.

I'm assuming that this is input:eek:utput, since the Pittman arm (connected to the steering box output) moves only a fraction of a circle from lock to lock, yet you've got to crank the steering wheel way around. So I believe it's 16/13 turns of the steering wheel would spin the output shaft around completely one time.

Anyway, just think of it as input:eek:utput. Lower input with the same output = higher output with the same input, i.e. quicker ratio.

I CANT EVEN STOP LAUGHING...
the 16/13 means the ratio is variable - it's a little slower in the center and gets quicker as you turn the wheel further.
this makes it "sporty" yet not as darty, in theory.
what it really does is just make the steering feel nonlinear, imo.

Both boxes are the same (with the exception of steering ratios).

The Sy box has a quicker ratio because of its longer wheel base.

However, if you are serious about a quick ratio box, send yours to www.powersteering.com and have them convert it to an even quicker ratio than was available in any stock box. I think they use the 'vette ratios. I maybe mistaken but I think its around 12:1.

Its been a while since I sent mine in so I forget all the specs at the moment but I was quite happy with the service and results.

Hey Todd, do you recall how much it cost?

If you swap the steering box, is that what it takes to make the truck no longer steer like a "Big Rig"?

If yer talking about the vagueness in the feel, I'd have to say NO.

There is still alot of wander on my truck. However, its been there ever since i owned it, with stock wheels, ZR-1's. After I rebuilt the complete front end and changed the idler arm an used poly bushings with all new ball joints and new tie-rod ends. The steering box project was a 2 fold project for me. Change out the suspected worn box (wasnt the case) and to get a quicker ratio..
Heck I even eliminated the OEM U-joints in the steering shaft, from the firewall forward. I have an idea its the part thats in the column (only thing left). I refuse to install a steering stabilizer as I know thats merely a band-aide as the truck COULDNT have wandered like this from the factory.

I will be victorious. If I have to install Rack and Pinion I will.. (wont cure the wandering, but will be cool feel).
