streetability

how streetable really is a ten second sy/ty? i'm curious to know before i go all out on my truck since i enjoy driving it so much. i don't want to drop a ton of money into it and not be able to enjoy it as a daily driver. i know boosted motors tend to be a lot more streetable than an equivalent n/a.

Re: streetability

Going from experience it seems like the more you do to these trucks the less reliable they become. But then again I could add a new air filter and blow my engine.

Re: streetability

If you build it with the purpose of streetabililty in mind, it can be done. Robert's Syclone from Sweden had the distinction of driving 3 hours each way to the track and running 9s. Most people who build the trucks for speed tend to take things out that aren't neccesary at the track. My Ty doesn't have a washer fluid reservoir or inner fenders. The Caltracs also sit a little low for bumpy roads. I got rid of my drag radials and got some all-season tires for driving on the street. I'm sure they wouldn't help my 60's at the track.

Getting your Ty into the 10's is going to take quite a bit of HP, definitely not for the weak of pocket book. Running a 10.9999 one time, after extensive prepping, is different to me than a "10 second truck" that is capable of 10's time and time again at the drop of a hat.

Streetable? Sure, there is no reason it can't be. Mine is 100% streetable and I enjoy driving it on nice days. Do I drive it every day - absolutely not. Even if mine weren't an 8k mile truck, I still wouldn't drive it every day for at least 4 reasons - 1)The money invested into the engine/drivetrain to go that fast (more than one time), 2)Keeping it looking nice as a daily driver is impossible, 3)I run DR's all the time and 112 octane fuel, and 3)Keeping everything in sufficient condition to run a 10sec quarter mile in a DD would be tough without a lot of prepwork. A tune that will net solid 10's doesn't give a lot of room for worn out parts.

Bottom line - There is no reason you can't have a 10sec daily driven Syclone (and maybe Typhoon). That is, if you can afford the bill to build it and maintain it, then don't have a problem with driving a rare, limited production 10 second truck (that you have sunk a small fortune into) to Wal-Mart on a crappy day while dodging runaway shopping carts and soccer moms.

I agree, streetable and daily driver are two totally different things. These trucks are very streetable, but no one daily drives them once they build them up. Too much time goes into building them in and too much money goes into them to daily drive them after you do a nice build up on one.

I know of a 10 sec truck around here thats gets driven quite a bit on nice days, but is stored winters and rarely gets driven in the rain.

FWIW you will need 600+ HP at the wheels to take a Ty into the 10's.Hope you got DEEP pockets.

Re: streetability

if i get it in the tens and get the body all slicked up i probably won't drive it in bad weather but i wanna make sure i can just hop in and drive. i dont' mind spending the money, i just wanna work out a plan and do it once not just keep replacing parts for better parts and replacing those parts with better parts. i get some desert play time starting this fall so i'll be able to put some money back to get started with which should cover a 4l80e swap and and get the suspension straight.

Re: streetability

I can start mine up and drive it anytime and anywhere I want to go. But I don't drive it all that much... on most Friday and Saturday nites I hang out with it at a local diner lot with about 30 other niteowls. We do a little crusing and couple playful side-by-sides ;) . I take it to work about three times a month during the summer (secured parking garage) . Go to the track about once a month. I drive it to the speed shop on Saturday's during the summer. Usually stop and pickup lunch for my friends there. I go to several car shows every summer.

I don't go to the store and malls with it  ...I don't take it to the movies. I don't go out to eat with it. I never leave it unattended...period! I could drive it as a daily if I wanted to waste 50 grand and a lot of labor just to see someone "permently borrow it", door ding it, pull out in front of it, key it for fun, etc.

Want a 10 sec Typhoon, done right...expect to put an additional 30 grand into a already nice nice clean one. And thats even if you copy the last build of one that has been through many different setups over 13 years. How do I know? "Stupid is as stupid does!!!" That would be me. :stupid:

Here's another one while we are on the stupid train...

How do you make a low nine - high eight second 2WD that is streetable? Answer: Become a slow learner and repeat the above, minus the front wheel drive.

But, hey...some people invest there time and money...and become rich, drive fast european cars, retire on golf courses, marry young chicks, etc. While they are getting fat and old, I'll be in the local nursing home explaining what a 10 sec Typhoon is (was) to a group of hard hearing, staring-at-the-wall, deleted memory guys that think I must have been cool to have owned such a beast  ... of course, the gorgious young 60 year old nurses will be thinking I am some old "crack pot that is just babbling about "riding-a-storm-out" . Do we really care...Hell no, because not everyone gets to own these addictive trucks...Only the few, Only the sick...Only us!!!

I have a good friend that ownes and drives a alcohol funny car  . He puts a ton of $$ in his fast car hobby...He says to me a couple of weeks ago. "Do you know how to make a small fortune in racing cars?...start out with a large one!" :boink:

Back on the orginal subject...want to own a well build 10 sec streetable Typhoon (or a much faster 2WD)? Save your $$ for a year or two and buy mine. (probably from my wife) :fan:

I am going back into my hole now...see ya this spring!

Re: streetability

I'd say from being in Marks truck its very very streetable. But the price of race gas to fill it up would flat out suck!

But heres the problem.. my truck is to fun and addictive to stop driving right now, whats gonna happen when I do run 10's all the time.. I'm gonna show that baby off all the time. :D

Re: streetability

Even though I'm new to the Sy scene, I've been in the Performance scene for Over 20 years.

What I do know is that a Boosted / Nitroussed 10 sec car can be much, much, much more streetable than a 10 second NA vehicle.

Also in most boosted applications there is no reason to run Race Gas on the street if you keep the Boost turned down.

If any of y'all have seen any of the Video's around of the AMS built 900+ hp EVO around, he doesn't run race gas on the street. - I lived on the Ms gulf coast before Katrina wiped out my house & we used to go to the street races with that guy. So I'm not passing around internet rumors, I've seen the car run.

Re: streetability

It depends on your defintion of streetable. Almost all of the 10 Sec SyTy are driven on the street even the 9 sec ones. A good portion of them don't have A/C, so it wouldn't be ideal to daily drive them in FL. The more HP, the more potential to break parts ; Regular maintenance is higher; In general the larger the turbo, the more lag or the larger stall converter is need, so that also reduces drivability as well. IMO For a daily driver, I would skip the 10 sec recipe, may go a little milder and shoot for somewhere in the 11's.

I think AWD make good street vehicle for going fast. I think its crazy to drive a 9-10 sec RWD vehicle on the street if you plan on unleashing some of its power.

Partially true, but tuning for a certain octane fuel involves a heck of a lot more than just raising or lowering the boost. I have a 93 octane tune for my truck, I just choose not to run it and keep 112 in the tank. Why? 112 costs me $5.75/gallon vs. approx. $3.00/gallon for 93. Considering the cost of my engine and the number of miles I drive it a year it just doesn't make sense to be "economical" and run 93.

Looking at the big picture, if I can't afford to buy fuel for it I sure the hell can't afford to break it. :p

Re: streetability

I could put my wipers back on...but I never drive it in the rain. The turbo is to big to run the AC. (It coud be modified to do so, I choose not to) And northern Indiana is not Flordia. I evenings are rather nice here. Non AC is not a problem for weekend evenings. I would recommend using the 70stealth turbo and targeting a 11.25-11.50 range for a Ty and mid to high 10s for a sy to have a comfortable healthy streetable syty. Even at that power you will be breaking it plenty.

AWD on the street is worth .5 to a full second on the street against a lot of very strong 2WD street/strip cars. The problem is that the street car scene is getting faster. We have several high eight sec cars running on the street here. If you want to hang with them, especially if most of them are your friends/crowd, you need to be in the tens and the lower the better. I can hang with some mid 9 second (track times) cars on the street. But this low 9, high 8 stuff is gone...

I know you saw that I said in most boosted applications. In some it's not practical.

Their is a guy Named Marco, I'm sure most of the Supra guys know's him. The main reason that I know him is that his company just started making LS1 Fbody turbo kits, HI Flow Turbo's. He claims that he drives his supra on the street all the time on C-15 & up to 59#'s of boost. But who would want to do the upkeep on that one.

As somone said in an above post, there are more & more street cars running in the 9's & 10's. I have a friend with an 01 Trans Am that's very streetable, it's got a 434 stroker motor & a progressive DP nitrous kit. Real street car with AC & everything, the only thing that kind of takes away from his streetability is that he's Running a built TH-350 RVMB with a Brake. The cage does kind of get in the way, but he just went 9.25 @ 143 with much more to go, this car is a semi daily driver & could be daily driven all the time, but it's not the most comfortable. Kirkey seats are comfortable for an hour or so at a time, but I'd hate to daily drive Kirkeys. ;).

The motor that's in the Formula in my signature is more than capable of being a daily driven street motor, it's just not a comfortable ride with the full race chasis.

Setup is everything, just seems that with Syty's you better harden everything. I would think that aftermarket engine control, FAST / BS3 / Megasquirt, something like those with the amount of control that offer would be a big + to a streetable HIPO Syty.
