Stumbled on a gold mine today...

I was doing a photo shoot at a very local, very small race shop today and I started looking around the shop and shooting the shit with the owner. We talked about his personal car he was building and took me over to the side of the shop to show me the motor that was going in it. He walked me over to these 4 motors wrapped in plastic and unwrapped one. Upon seeing the motor I asked, "Is that a dry sump ASA 4.3 V6?" He replied, "Damn, you do know a crapload about cars!" I almost shit my pants. I offered to buy a couple but he didn't know what he was doing with them yet. I'm gonna bug the hell outta him until he coughs them up. :D

It's amazing when you fall into these things, just thought I'd share.

Hey, whattsa ASA 4.3 V6???

Depending on the years and such, it is usually an oddfire V6 with aluminum heads either raised runner 23 or 18 degree. Usually a bowtie block, forged crank, rods and pistons. Usually a 9:1 compression ratio with a big lift mechanical roller cam.

But it all depends. At the right price, they can be an excellent starting point for a strong build up. They can also be expensive boat anchors as well.

What he said.

Know what you are dealing with before you think you are getting a great deal. Most of those motors are bored out big time. To run boost, you need different pistons, to keep the compression low with new pistons, you'd need shorter rods. Then, do your homework on oddfire parts & computer control. Usually the heads are really worked up, and the cams are huge.

Hoover's motor was an old ASA buildup, and many others' motors started out in ASA cars. Nowadays, the ASA motor is the LS1; it was used to level the playing field in ASA, while making it cheaper for racers to compete.
