Sy Road Trip

Well I'll be back in the states on leave here in about a week now. i've been hearing yall talk about different problems with your SyTy's and constant references to beign unreliable. I'm new to the whole SYTY sceen. My truck is esentually stock and I have been debating driving it or just renting a car for my Road Trip up to Indianapolis from Orlando to see my girlfriend. I always travel with a small tool box and extra fluids. If i should happen to have problems would it be easy to get the parts I need to get me back on the road?

I plan on being up there a week or so any suggestions on what to do up in Indy area?

If the truck is running OK and you don't boost launch it at every stop on the way you will probably be ok.

If you know of issues and hoping they won't pop up, well take your chances.

The museum and track at indy are good, otherwise indy is just full of inbreed cousins.

Ive been driving my Ty almost daily for over a year. Knock on wood- Ive never been stranded. I did have one problem where I seemed to be out of gas one time. It would run but wouldnt take any load at all. I shut it down, poked around under the hood for a few minutes (didnt find anything obvious) started it up and drove away.

The only things Ive replaced besides fluids/routine maintenance are the alternator and the AC compressor.

If the truck is running OK and you don't boost launch it at every stop on the way you will probably be ok.

No know problems, but hasnt been driven more than a couple hundred miles in the past few months.... Nope dont plan on doing any boost launches but I may eat a ricer/camaro/mustang/ or two if the piss me off :lol: I cant say that I wont do any but I may race alittle. Plus being a 1000 mile trip there may be some susatined triple digit speeds at times.

I have never been to Indy before so I may go an check out the track and museum. they may have those but its also got my girlfriend :boink:

Nothing would ruin a R/R period more than being stranded away from home with a broke vehicle and consuming all your free time either repairing it OR facing a huge tow bill. I would recommend you drive your Syclone locally and get a rental for the long trip. You'll probably get better gas mileage, still be able to achieve your desired speeds and ALWAYS remember, the best handling/performing car IS a rental car . If it breaks under testing, within a couple hours at most, you are on your way again with a replacement rental vehicle. I've been where you are at now and know how quick R/R periods go by so you need to plan to maximize your intended agenda while here. Your Sy might be alright but then again, it might not.......IMO, it is not worth risk. Be safe over there!

i bought my sy from tennessee and it had been sitting for 6 years and after change of fluids took the trip back to north carolina easily no problems at all just got smoother with the miles

R/R last time over here I staied with in the state of FL the whole time. And yep you hit my concerns right now the head. I'd love to take my Syclone on the trip. LOL and only if the rental car companies knew what I did in there cars... By the time they were returned they were Airboune qualified LOL.I take enough risks over here and not alway by choice.... If any of yall up in and around Indy want to get together I'll be more inclined to drive the Sy.

I wouldn't do it with my Sy because of the salt on the road up in the Northern Climates.

They are still salting the roads in March up there? I'm from the south and never lived up north so I dont know about those things.... But I have alot of experence with salt form driving on the beaches. Just got to make sure you clean everything really good afterwards.

We just a few inches of snow (I think the midwest did as well) on Friday. So yes we have salt on the road. I can't speak about the midwest, around here don't start cleaning the road until April and mixed in with April rain that is when the roads are finally salt free. Dec through the end of March is our typical snow season. Salt on the road (particularly the highway) is a lot different then beach sand and salt. You not driving 60-70 mph plus on the beach. The salt gets everywhere particularly if it wet out.

I live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and the salt is *devastating* to vehicles. ONE winter I stored my truck too late and had to drive it through the snow/salt to get it into winter storage. That brief trip was enough to corrode my Derale transmission pan as well as a few spots on the frame where I had scraped the undercoating to check for a VIN stamping (stupid idea in retrospect...). My advice is to avoid winter road salt at all costs!!

And I also have been left stranded on the side of the road in Iowa with my Syclone a few years ago when I took a 10 hour road trip to Kansas for the SyTy Nationals. Alternator exploded leaving me dead in the water. I had to hitch hike a ride into town, sleep at a stranger's house, wait for the parts stores to open, and hitch hike back to my truck.

I would rent a car. Like others have stated, if anything goes wrong, it'll just eat up your R/R time. Save the break in period of falling in love with your Sy when you have the extra time to do so. So, if anything comes up, you'll be able to deal with it at your leisure and not be rushed to get it done during your R/R time now.

Get a rental for the trip it will most definitely save your truck from the salt. That stuff will get into area that you wouldn't think about and start that blister effect, that show up over time as holes. When they show up you will be going into your very own :rant: :rant: :rant: .

I WANT to drive it, just worried about the road conditions. Would a week of salt kill me? I'm only up there for a week then its back to Sunny Florida where she will be washed and wax, and Quik Detailed every day... I am anal with my black vehicles... Water Spots :rant: :rant:

Rental. I'm from WI as well, and salt is a killer on old S-trucks. IMO, Syclones aren't the most comfortable vehicles in the world for long distance hauls, a Ty on the other hand....
