I got my truck out on monday and things don't seem right with the transmission. The truck has been parked for around 6 months. It shifts soft and around 500 to 800 rpm early. It also will not perform a downshift at WOT. For example this morning on the highway at around 75 mph in 4th gear. I stomped on it and it stayed in 4th instead of dropping to third. I adjusted the T.V. cable by depressing the adjuster button and open the throttle all the way. It pulled the cable all the way to the end of its adjustment at WOT on throttle body. The cable is pulled tight with this adjustment at WOT and feels correct. But at the idle postion on the throttle body the cable has around 1/2 to 1 inch of slack (the cable slides freely inside the cable end). Is this free play correct?

It sounds like your cable has stretched. There should not be any slack in the cable after its adjusted.

I'm about to set mine up but I will be using a pressure gauge. You should not have any slack at idle because the idea is to SET it so that there is pressure increase as you press the gas pedal. Valve has to be set at starting position then, as you press pedal, pressure increases until you have valve pulled to allow for maximum pressure at WOT.
I advise against road testing and recommend usage of a 0-300psi pressure gauge or you will be pulling your transmission out and your hair. Another thing to try is to take the tv cable and pull on it to help clear of any blockage by increasing pressure with no need of road test. Maybe you have valves sticking due to lack of usage. That why a stored vehicle needs to be driven at least until operation temps are reached and cobwebs are shaken off.

I took my Sy to the local transmission shop I've used for the past 25 years and they checked my TV cable adjustment for me.
They've done countless 700R4's and 200-4R's over the years and I trust them thoroughly.

How was the adjustment prior to theirs?
Did they let you in the shop to watxh them do it?

To the OP. I had the same issue on my Sy. DO NOT hold the adjustment tab down while opening the throttle. Adjust it like this: Press adjustment tab, slide cable all the way IN, release tab, then open the throttle. It will/should be slightly difficult to open the throttle, but it will adjust. This method of adjustment fixed my problem. HTH.

We've known them for many many years, they LOVE hot rods and had to come out to see the Sy. ;)

After checking out the truck, he did the adjustment in their parking lot.
I stood there and watched and it took maybe 30 seconds.
He only had to adjust it MAYBE 2 clicks.
Jeff's a perfectionist and has been doing tranny's for longer than I've known him so I trust him thoroughly.
Whoever had it before me (or the previous owner), did an excellent job on the adjustment.

Truck was driving great, that adjustment check was one of those items on my "maintenance check list".
