thinking about going to rear wheel drive

Which transmission is a direct bolt in when converting TY into two wheel drive. Already deleted front transfer case due to leakage and internal damage.Transmission is slipping and looking for an alternative. Is a 700r the best or only option. I know you guys know your stuff so asking for any help possible.

Re: thinking about going to rear wheel drive

just about any 2wd tranny will go in but 700r4 will be easiest since it was a common option, you could source a 2wd tranny and rebuild a salvage yard drive shaft and it'll work, might be a little easier on the tranny too.

Re: thinking about going to rear wheel drive

I know guys are gonna roll their eyes at me but do the 80e. The Ty has a 32 spline configuration on the rear driveshaft. You just need to lengthen it some. You'll need to make a crossmember or adaptor one. Just a 2wd 4L80e from the junkyard. You'll never hurt it with 2wd and you don't have to worry about all the adaptors and stuff. Only thing you have to worry about is the controller, crossmember, and rear driveshaft.
I am curious how you did the front. Still have the torsion bars and stock hubs? Just wondering how all of that would hold together with everything else being removed.

Have you ever driven a SyTy with the front driveshaft pulled? It's totally useless. Give it even 40% throttle and the tires are up in smoke. Just cruising off a stop sign and the 1-2 shift can start the tires spinning.

I can't see why you would need a 4L80, the truck will never hook up anyways, so hardly any stress on the transmission (opposite scenario of a 100% hooking AWD tranny-killing launch).

Re: thinking about going to rear wheel drive

but if the 80 was there and setup and decides to go back awd all he would need is George's shaft and adapter, adjust the driveshaft length and be good to go. that and 2wd will destroy a 700. i shelled one behind a 2wd n/a lb4 4.3. it didn't give any warning an i lost 3/4 and 2nd barely held. it wasn't slipping or anything before hand.

Re: thinking about going to rear wheel drive

It may be off topic from what he wanted but the gear ratios of the 700 and the 80e are very different. Where a 700 has a totally useless first gear (too low), the 80e is much friendlier. 1st and 2nd gear ratio differences are huge like the 700. The crazy tire smoke you get with the 700 is slightly lessened with the 80e because of this. If he puts slicks on it for the track he'll stick break a 700. I'm curious how he's holding the front together with no CV axles. Will 2wd spindles bolt up to the 4wd control arms?
If you just took out the transfer case, your still pushing dead weight up front. If it's not making you move forward, I just consider dead weight.

george,

not sure but cant you just cut off the axles and leave the remaining outer portion. So what if the remaining inboard stub is still spinning. the big nut on the axle end outboard of the rotor is till holding the aseembly in place.

correct me if i am wrong.

not sure about bolting 2wd spindles in place of 4wd spindles....

Yep, Ed is right and that is easiest way to do it and stil be able to physically remove front diff.

Re: thinking about going to rear wheel drive

Jus removed transfer case and left everything else in place, lost a couple of pounds in the process. Owned TY for about ten years just making another toy to lay patches with. He also deleted ABS. This is my neighbors TY. Mine is still AWD. Thanks for the info. Keep it coming. He asked me to post the question.

Shoot me a PM with everything you want to know and your goals.

I am RWD and run a TH400 which I would suggest over the 80e. But that is my personal preference.

If you are not hooking as Tooky said that is not because you are RWD, it is because you do not have it set up correctly.

Keep the 4wd spindles and keep the half shafts installed.

The rear will be the first thing to go. The gov-loc is a POS and will explode when he starts backpedaling for traction. A guy around here has a TY and has had his Awd stuff removed for around 20K miles he just simply took the cv shaft apart bolted the outer portion up as stock and removed the propshaft, differential and inner half of the cv's. He still has the 4472 in there ruining it.

 That didn't buff right out? You move up to a power locker in your 7.5 or 8.5 out of a non ZR2 4x4?

modified 8.5 from an impala to rid using c-clips.... this is why nhra doesnt want c-clips under 10.99 and faster.

btw the rubber the tire left on the front (yes front) bumber during the 560 deg spin rubbed right out. :)

Re: thinking about going to rear wheel drive

only reason to go 400 over 4l80e is no electronic but then no overdrive either. i've been considering doing this myself from time to time, most right after i broke a propshaft though

Re: thinking about going to rear wheel drive

Thanks guys, wondering about the electronics if using a nonelectronic transmission.

if i ever start making money and can afford to put my sy into storage for maybe a few years whle i get together enough money to restore it completely, i would keep it AWD and get a 4l80e and build it all

Sell 10 or 12 of those cars in your sig and you can buy a few of them:)

Controller is not that big of a deal. I've got a TCI controller (older style) I'll let go for $500+shipping including a cable and programming. Just let me know your shift points you need.
80e has the exact same gear train that takes the beating as a TH400. Only reason to do TH400 is it's cheaper. Same goodies. You can actually see the casting line in the early cases where they added the "extension" for the overrun and OD assemblies.
