timing cover

Ok.... So this weekend I just about got my typhoon's engine back together with a full rebuild. I put a double roller timing set on it and the stock timing cover is too shallow. Will any aftermarket timing cover work? Also will I need to get an aftermarket timing pointer?

Re: timing cover

The stock cover should work, do you have it together properly?. You might need a aftermarket timeing pointer depending on what cover you buy. Ther's lots to choose from out there. Also since your into the engine that far, why not put on a aftermarket harmonic balancer.

It is all together properly! It is like a 1/4 in shy. What kind of harmonic balancer should I look into?

Re: timing cover

Fluid damper is one of the popular names, check summit or jegs, see what they have. Still kinda puzzled over the chain part, it should fit under a stock cover.Do you have the bottum gear all the way up to the crankshaft?

Yeah the timing chain lines up, it is all stright. I did have to replace the bolts that hold the cam gear on because one broke during instalation. The bolts that I bought the head is about a 1/2 of an inch do you think that could be the problem?

wrong chain gearset. a roller gearset has a dished cam gear allowing it to sit tighter to the block. if you have the old gear take a really good look at it,you'll see what i mean. GT

I wouldn't spend a ton of money on a replacement balancer. Either stock replacement, or Hood sells a Pioneer that has timing marks etched in.

If you're building a full-competition motor, it'd be different, but for most street motors a less expensive balancer is sufficient.

I've heard of certain brands of double roller chains not clearing the cover. The non-roller timing gear is entirely wrong, I think you'd know if you had one of those. One of the local guys had this issue and didn't catch it, ended up having to pull the pan/cover to get all the shavings out.

The cast aluminum covers are typically deeper.

Re: timing cover

After work last night I got to looking and the cam gear bolts that I used, and they ended up being the issue. I made yet another trip to the parts store got a few different styles of bolts, and found a set that worked. I was able to get the timing cover bolted on last night. So now I will look into a new balencer.
