tranny suggestions

is it possible got convert a ty trans for use in a 2wd s10? I've talked to several transmission shops, but got mixed answers. Some say just do a performance build on a 2wd 700r4. Some say the case is different from the standard 700r4, so i cant swap the output shaft and tail housing to one from a 2wd. Others have told me that it should be possible. Motor is completely stock for now.

Re: tranny suggestions

The case itself is not much different for a 4x4 vs 2wd, assuming you have the right YEAR. 700's changed valvebody configuration within the years, older are not as good.

Look for a case with a K cast into it.

Syty's have special valvebody and other parts inside that can be hard to find/buy.

Re: tranny suggestions

i definitely need an overdrive trans, as this will be my new daily driver. I have the stock sy/ty trans from the donor vehicle. would it make sense to have the syty guts put into a 2wd case?

Re: tranny suggestions

I'm just building a simple daily driver. I already had the s10 when i came across a typhoon drive train.

Ok then lets start all over.

What are you building?

Yeah, we need more details here. From the limited amount of info you have put out I am gonna wager a guess and say you are putting a SyTy engine in a 2WD S-10? This can be done, I haven't done it and I think it would probably be a pain in the ass but still a cool project. Back to the topic though.

As stated above you need the right year model of 700R4 to do this. In theory I would be about 98% sure you could transfer most of the inner workings from a SyTy 700R4 to the 2WD 700R4.

My question is, why? If you are experienced enough to confidently change out the valve body and all that plus the tail shaft and housing then why not just build the 2WD tranny with new parts and beef it up to handle the power of your engine? Shift points would have to be tuned I assume as the powerband of the SyTy engine is different then the N/A 4.3 but I don't believe that is a difficult task but I am not certain. I tend to stay away from trans stuff. I hate them for some reason.

Re: tranny suggestions

I wont be doing the rebuild, I'll be having a shop do that part. I know that I could just do a performance build on a 2wd trans, but I just wasn't about using the sy/ty specific parts during the rebuild.

Re: tranny suggestions

I would just get a 2wd 4L60 from the same year as your Typhoon drivetrain and rebuilt that transmission. Swap over the Valve Body, separator plate, governor, corvette servo and tv valve line up (or buy 0.500 tv valve) from your typhoon transmission.
