im trying to line everything up for my tranny install. is there a gasket on the end of the tailshaft?

there is a gasket on the trans between the trans and xcase but thats it, there is no tailshaft gasket to speakof.

Are you talking about an O-ring? There is an O-ring between the transmission and transfercase adaptor on some trucks. I've done others and it not be there. If yours had one on the adaptor, just leave it on there. There is a slight interference fit between the adaptor and the transmission case. There is a paper gasket between the transfer case adaptor and transfer case itself.From sytyauthority.net:
