Transfer case check

I test drove my ty this saturday for the first time. Noticed that at sharp corners it feels more like a 4x4 than AWD. Did a search on the forum and found out that my transfer case might be bad. Drained the oil and WTF... smells more like rear axle oil than ATF! Some stupid moron probably filled the tranfer case with 80W 90..
I guess I will have to buy a used one. I have found one but how do I know it is OK? Is there any way to test it?

i am having the same deal over here.
the clutch is prolly toasted, and was wondering if you can still get them..
you can drive with this problem though.

I read somewhere that you can buy the clutch but it is expensive as hell. The chain is supposed to be cheap though.
When driving I wonder if there is a risk of breaking something?

you won't break anything, just avoind heavily cornering, cause you're tires will get the beating.

It's almost always to replace the T-case than to rebuild it :2cents:

I have notice it in my Sy and old Ty. In my Sy I have narrow it down to it only happening when I first drive it before the fluid are warmed up. The cold it is, the more pronounce the 4x4 feel (an example, it happens when back out of the driveway when the truck is cold but it doesn't happen 3 miles later when pulling into work.)

Same exact thing here. Been this way from the day I bought it...2 years ago.. TC must be on its way out...but my trans is also on its way out, so I baby it...prob. that is why its still holding up...

The viscous coupling thingy inside the transfercase is sealed, so additives / snakeoil shouldn't fix it.

These trucks generally don't take well to snake oil (does anything?). :lol:

I dunno, the oil from a Viper or Cobra (freshly killed, of course) might satisfy a GMC's hunger.....

What type of oil does the transfer case take. I feel this also when i am backing up seems that it is more of a 4x4 then AWD. ANyway i would like to start changing the fluids.

Ok, this problem with the front tires feeling more like a 4x4 than the AWD when backing out of a spot at full lock, mine does this also, and i really didnt pay much attention to it, but it seem to just do this when its cold also, is this normal for these trucks, or is that a sign that with 160K miles my stock TC is going south??

Will changing the fluid really help anything???

the Viscous clutch is still available and it's not serviceable(sealed unit) and it's not cheap although I can get good takeouts for about $400 instead of the $600 or so they cost new.

Ok, so the 4x4 feel when the truck is cold means the VC is shot and fluid wont do squat. Ok, wel thats good to know i guess.

Will a shot VC have any other affects, like will it send more or less power to the front and also driving this truck in this condition wont hurt anything? I guess i wont try to do any AW doughnuts anytime soon.
