Transmission Stopped Working

Just wondering if I need a new tranny.
I was driving my Ty and it was doing great. Light turned red and started to stop when something let loose in the tranny. I lost all gears and reverse all at once and had to coast it out of the way and push the truck on to the side of the road. Something is making noise under the truck but I haven't been able to get under it yet to explore what it is.
I do have the front prop shaft out of the truck currently.
Does this sound like a tranny problem, transfer case issue, or something else??
After reading some of the posts, would a TV cable do this?
Any help is appreciated greatly. I have found a 700R4 that is built for a good price but want to make sure that is the problem before purchasing.

IMO it does not sound like the transmisson. I would make sure it is not the transfer case or the rear drive shaft (it would be make a horrible racket if it was a broken drive shaft though).

I would look over everything before you go out buying stuff.

Re: Transmission Stopped Working

Pretty sure it's not the drive shaft as it would go into gear if that were the case so I agree with you there.
What I have is a truck that starts, runs and stays like it's in neutral in any gear with the exception of park. I do hear something spinning and making a noise from under the vehicle. Not a really loud noise or anything but a noise that was not present prior to this happening.
I am also starting to think it is not the tranny itself because all the gears would not have gone all at once, I thought I would still have some gear. If the transfer case went out would I lose all the gears forward and reverse?

Thanks for the offer but this truck is basically going to be a car show cruiser. I had a 1998 Trans Am that was fully built in every way. Heads, cam, intake, headers, tune, Yank SS3600 stall, 3:73 gears, bilsteins, BMR springs and sway bars with poly bushings, upgraded control arms, pan hard bar, strut tower brace, you name it that car had it. That car never saw a track and would have been fully capable of high to mid 11's.
With this truck I will be going stop light to stop light here and there but I dumped a bunch of money into my other car for no real reason. I might do that in the future but not anytime soon. Don't get me wrong it was a blast to drive but way overkill for the street.
I think a moderately built 700R4 should be suitable for the amount of use this truck is going to see.
I will be doing some testing tomorrow to try and determine what the problem is. I have been recovering from the flu and was actually on my way to the doctor when this happened to the truck. Fun trying to move a truck out of traffic with the flu.

Re: Transmission Stopped Working

One thing i would do is put a pressure guage on the trans and that would tell you if you have a busted pump or not. If i was going to my In-laws this weekend i would say i would stop by and look at it for you but we are not coming up for another couple of weeks. They live in Grayson/Lawerenceville

I appreciate the offer. My mom actually lives in Grayson. I may just have it towed over to a local place that does some other performance vehicles.
My thing is I just like to know what I'm getting into ahead of time. I have found several transfer cases for between $175 and $200.00. Some even slightly cheaper. Found several transmissions for around $500-600.00. I have even found one place that did my other truck that can do a 700R4 4WD installed for $1095.00 with a 12month/12,000mile warranty.
I will probably just get it towed there and he can figure out what it needs. He had my 94 4x4 Blazer done in 24 hours.

Re: Transmission Stopped Working

Good luck with that. It's not your avg 4x4 trans, though.

Of course it isn't.... LOL!!! Nothing on this truck is normal it seems. I should have just kept my T/A.
I figured this truck would be a better investment though since it is a rare breed and collectible. Plus I have back problems and it is easier to get in and out of the Typhoon then a lowered LS1 Trans Am. I really like the Typhoon alot.
Lookin like I will just take it up there and see what happens.

Re: Transmission Stopped Working

Just don't let them keep yours as a core. And make sure it retains all of the syty specific parts.

Re: Transmission Stopped Working

I literally have the exact same problem on mine, only I never heard any abnormal noise, it just lost all gears in less than 5 miles

Re: Transmission Stopped Working

I will go ahead and warn you. Your average transmission shop will tell you that they will be able to build it and will give you a warrenty but it will not last more than a couple of weeks and eventually you will be right back inthe prediciment that you are in.

You need to get ahold of one of the vendors on the board here that know what they are doing wit the trans.

Jwaller is the closest ( he is in SC) this is who built my trans
RPM transmissions ( I think they are in indiana) the owner IIRC has the TTv8 syclone
You have Race proven motors in Cali
Also Rossler builds really good trans also.

Like i said these guys know what it takes to build transmissions for these truck and for them to last. It is going run you a good bit more what they quoted you just a for warning for it to be built right. Expceially if the truck is not stock and also if you race it or beat on it a good bit.

I have been there before. If I can help let me know.

My parents live in atlanta so we could arrange shipping easily for free if you decide to use me. I warrenty all my work and my rep on trans work is second to none. You won't be disappointed.

What he said :stupid: The average shop isn't going to spend the time to do it correctly. As for the 12 month/12,000 mile warranty, many times they will fix it once and if it has hard parts broken they will often charge you for those. The 2nd time, your out of luck. Sometimes you will find out they swapped out your transmission and you have to scramble around to find the missing SyTy specific parts.

I believe it guys. This was for my beater 94 full size Blazer which is a completely different animal then my Ty. That's why I had that tranny done there.
It was so simple when I had the T/A. Either I did it myself or I could just take it Vengeance Racing for the more complicated stuff.
I will be contacting you J....thanks!!
