Truck wont start - need help!!

Alright, so the truck turns over but doesnt even act like it wants to start - no popping just cranking. I have verified the following:

- Brand new battery - fully charged
- Good coil
- Spark at all plugs
- Fuel pump is operable
- Fuel pressure is good (have adjusted up and down) currently set at 55psi (running 50lb injectors)
- ECM and ECM B fuses are both good
- Valve train is all in tact and operating correctly

Mechanically everything seems to be operating as it should - leads me to believe that its something fuel or electrical?

I am at a loss for what it may be (possibly ecm? and is there any way to test?)....any suggestions are greatly apprecaited - thanks

Was the truck running ok and then just would not start one day or has it been being worked on and now wont start? Just want to know what direction to tell you to go. Some things to try either way would be...You can pull a plug after trying to start it and see if it smells like it has fuel getting to it. You can spray some carb cleaner in the intake and then try to see if it will pop by cranking it, if it pops like it wants to start then you know you do not have enough if any fuel getting to the cylinders.

Squirt some gas into the TB and see if tries to fire. If not then it's probably the ign module not telling the ECM to fire the injs. Do a search but I believe you can have spark and still have a bad module.

Double check that the injector harness is plugged in all the way. It's buried back under the FP regulator,

I have pdf scans of the no start diagnosis from the service supplement. I can email them to you.

Re: Truck wont start - need help!!

truck was running fine before hand and then died - it would not start again immediately after it stalled. its been sitting for a while now as i havent had time to work on it - spring has officially lit a fire under me and i need to get this beast back on the road.

I will try some gas in the TB when i get home and double check that the harness is securely plugged in.

Also, powercat6 if you could email those to flintdawg@gmail.com i would greatly appreciate it. Its time to blow off the dust and get this thing out again.

Re: Truck wont start - need help!!

If you have spark at the spark plugs (not at the coil wire), you have adequate fuel pressure (over 30 psi) and the injectors are firing then it should at least pop. Since you have verified the first two, I would put a test light across an injector and see if it is flashing when cranking, or even simpler yet, put a screwdriver against the injector body, put your ear to the other side and listen for it to "click" as it opens and closes during a crank. If there isn't a click, check for power at the pink/black supply wire. It should be powered up with Key-On.

If it was running good when it was parked, I wouldn't be too worried about mechanical at this point.

So I put a test light light on the injector harness and it flashes off and on - plus i can slightly smell fuel after cranking it a few times....any other ideas or tests to diagnose?

when it quit running it just stalled out and then wouldnt fire again....thanks for your help!

Is it possible that your timing chain jumped a few teeth?

Re: Truck wont start - need help!!

Have you actually checked timing?

Old rule: Fuel (something close to correct amount) + compression + spark (at the right time) = bang

Gotta be one of the three.

If you're concerned about it being mechanical do a compression check.

How does it sound when you crank. IOW do you hear the starter "work" through each cylinder?

Re: Truck wont start - need help!!

i will check the compression - plus i will loosen the distibutor and move it around to see if i can get it to pop off. thanks again for all of the ideas

Re: Truck wont start - need help!!

I had a problem similar to that. truck was runing and died would not restart it would just crank over it turned out to be the oil sending unit hope this helps.

First time I checked my timing after purchase my hold-down was loose. Timing was close so it ran pretty good.

I would try to check timing without moving the dist. Just disconnect the tan wire, hookup your light and crank. The light will flash (every two revolutions) and you can see if it's way off before you fiddle with it.

Re: Truck wont start - need help!!

so compression is good - i replaced the oil sending unit - still nothing when i roll it over....

timing is set where it should hit so i sprayed some starting fluid in it and it fired but wouldnt keep running. obviously it stalled out after it ran out of fluid so it really just rumbled and then died. when i tested the injectors with the noid it flashed like they were pulsating but perhaps it not actually getting any fuel into the cylinders - (tank is full of gas - i made sure and double checked)

I know it has different injectors (50lb) and a KB chip not sure if its tuned for 50lb injectors but it ran before hand - i was going to start tuning it once i get it up and running

any thoughts?

KB never made a 50# chip. Get a 50# chip or starter bin or put in the stock injectors with a stock injector chip.

dont have stock injectors anymore....always ran on these injectors....i did try installing a 50lb bin on the ostrich and still no luck. my plan was to get it running and then work on tuning?

is there any way to test the ecm?

Re: Truck wont start - need help!!

It's possible your truck is in clear flood mode. What is the throttle position sensor data. If you can't scan it use a meter at the connector. Dark blue wire should be a round 1 volt at closed throttle. If it is reading near 4.5-5 volts. You will have significantly less fuel and it may not start. You will still have some fuel pulses/volume though. If you have high voltage, test the ground circuit. No ground will cause a high TPS voltage more often than a bad TPS.

How about verifying that the idle motor isn't stuck wide open. I can't say I have seen that, but it would make for uncalculated air. It should still start though, just something weird that could be overlooked.

I would also verify correct operation of your fuel gauge. I have had to replace my high dollar one before because it read low. There is nothing worse than a bad diagnostic tool. :2cents:
