Ok im putting on 1.5 crane gold roller rocker on vortec heads. when turning it over the valves ( I think) are hitting the pistons. using the edlbrock timming set 7801. I put the to dots ( crank dot at 12 & the cam gear dot at 6. Sound right so far? ok. ( I was told that this might not be right) ?? So went to cran's web site http://www.cranecams.com/?show=techarticle&id=2 Went by the directions that they said. & when turning it over it come along A couple hard spots. I wait like 1-2 min. and then it will turn over fine. ?? No clue at this point. Please help if you can..

Thanks!
Aj.

You got spark plugs in it?

Be careful there can be other marks also, been caught that way myself also. Sometimes is a triangle, square and circle, etc.

If this is a fresh motor I would check valve clearance with soem clay. Better to do it now and know is right then later.

What cam?

I am willing to bet that you have the dot over the crank key aligned with the dot on the cam gear. Sounds like you have a multikeyway set. If you are using the dot setup, then you must install the crank gear with the keyway that has the dot over it on the crank keyway and then there should be a dot on one of the crank gear teeth that you actually align with the cam gear. Look good as I have seen some of these where the stamping was very very faint. WHen lookig at the gear, the mark should be 2 or 3 teeth to the left of the keyway slot that you are using in the crank gear. ODuble check and def put a picture up of your timing set installed.

It can be confusing if you dont do it everyday....I too am an automitve machinist and builder. Have seen this quite a few times...It happens...no big deal.

Ok. I see the key way is lined up with the dot. & the other dot is like on the other side of the crank gear from the key way. Not 3 teeth to the left like 8-10 teeth. sound right?? Agin it is A Edelbrock 7801.. these instrustion suck..

I know it's enough to drive ya crazy at times. Should be alot more descriptive being as it's so damn important.
Here's a edited version of the picture.

I drove all the way to cincinati one time to help a guy who had done the same thing. I knew it had to be cam timing.... sure enough.. pulled cover... put the set on the right way and had it running later that afternoon. :)
I think it was a Edelbrock T-set too.. Lol.

Re: Valves hitting pistons when turning it over by hand HELP!

found the problum, machinest set the crank gear at the squar (4 deg. retard) I set the cam gear at 0 (zero) I did not think to check that when putting it togather. It is fixed now. Thanks for all your help.
