Weird Intake/Engine Problem....

I bought my Typhoon without a factory airbox. It just had mesh screening over the turbo inlet. I picked up a factory intake elbow, tube, Fram airfilter, and airbox and installed them onto the truck. The truck cuts out under full throttle around 4000 RPMs with the intake assembly in place. I took off the intake and ran the truck without anything but the mesh screen, and it ran fine.

Any ideas?

PS:

The fuel gauge is also not working. I already clened the ground for the gas tank/rear lights. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Weird Intake/Engine Problem....

Well first thought... Does it run with everything in place but without the air filter element? Obviously there's a restriction somewhere. Check everything including the passage in the cowl that gets air into the filter housing.

I've not fooled with a SyTy fuel gauge but try grounding the sender wire at the tank from the gauge. Commonly this will put the gauge to full.

Re: Weird Intake/Engine Problem....

I tried it today with everything in place but the air filter, and it still does the same thing. I also noticed that there were no vacuum lines attached to the electronic device on top of the turbo, could that have anything to do with it?

Re: Weird Intake/Engine Problem....

Yup! That's the boost control solenoid. There's a fitting on the outlet of the turbo that goes to the solenoid and then one from the solenoid to the Wastegate actuator. The passenger side fitting goes to the turbo and the upper drivers side goes to the actuator. There should also be an electrical connector to make the thing work.

If you have the stock wastegate, Do not drive with those vacuum lines unattached to the boost soleniod or your going blow your motor! If you do not have a vacuum line attach to the wastegate actuator (round piece with a rod going the back of the turbo) and the wastegate is hooked up. Your turbo has no way to basically has to bleeding off boost. The turbo will continue to make boost until the headgasket blows, the turbo breaks or the engine internals grenade, its usually the engine that goes...

Re: Weird Intake/Engine Problem....

The electrical part of the solenoid is connected, but not the vacuum lines are not. I won't drive it anymore until I get it figured out.

Is this what is causing the issue with the motor cutting out with the airbox assembly in place? Why does it work ok without the airbox in place?

Re: Weird Intake/Engine Problem....

If your wastegate isnt working or the actuator is disconnected, dont even think of driving the truck. In an effort to make more power for free, our friend with Sy#156 removed his actuator, and now his truck is in our backyard with a gash in the oil pan and a thrown rod.

i'm sure you suspect that if it's making boost without the air intake in place and not when the intake is in place that it is running fine. i would get the vacuum lines hooked up first then try to figure out what is going on before yo do anything else. i'm sure your getting alot of spark retard, which is probably why its gutting out.

Why would it not cut out with the intake tube removed and then cut out with it on?

Does anyone have a vacuum diagram on how to hook up this solenoid?

Thanks!

Yur welcome but...

Please excuse but it's not vac it's pressure and I described the plumbing in my previous post.

"The passenger side fitting goes to (a fitting near the outlet of) the turbo and the upper drivers side goes to the actuator. There should also be an electrical connector to make the thing work." Get this fixed then let us know if it still cuts out.

Re: Weird Intake/Engine Problem....

Thanks for your help guys. I now have the hose routing figured out.

Unfortunately my problem still remains. Underneath full boost and throttle, the engine cuts out with the intake tube on. With it off, it runs just fine.

Any other ideas?

Re: Weird Intake/Engine Problem....

First I'd try it with the tube and air filter housing but WITHOUT the air filter. Then try it without the air filter housing but with the tube.
Also, and this is a real stretch, do you have the PVC line connected to the intake tube? Maybe that PVC valve has failed and your drawing, who knows what, through the PVC valve. Like a said a real stretch. To bad you couldn't rig up a vacuum line to the intake of the turbo and do a test run and see if it's pulling some vacuum.

Have you checked the outlet of the turbo? If the seal has failed on the turbo shaft and (with the tube in place) you pull just enough vacuum to load the engine with oil? Another real stretch I know.

I'm back to my first suggestion. I can't help but think that something is restricting the flow of air into the turbo. You just gota find it.

Re: Weird Intake/Engine Problem....

I have tried it with and without the air filter, and with and without the pvc hoses connected. It is really irritating. I will play with it a little more. I appreciate your help.

Re: Weird Intake/Engine Problem....

Where are you located? perhaps another syty owner could help you out in person or something.. or could you possibly contact the previous owner and ask wtf is up with it?

Re: Weird Intake/Engine Problem....

What a puzzle. I'd still take a look at the outlet from the turbo to IC. Just to take it off the list if nothing else.
