What size waste gate came on the stock ty turbos? I was looking into a 38mm waste gate, would this be big enough or not. It is a mild bulit ty

Stock wastegate design is integral / internal wastegate. An external , like a 38mm would be something you could have welded to your crossover pipe.

Do a search on wastegates, and you will find that the best boost control you will get with a stock turbo is an external WG welded to the crossover.

If you decide to upgrade the turbo , then Precision Turbo makes a complete turbo / downpipe kit with integral WG. Its excellent quality and once you've had a truck with a bigger turbo, the stock turbo trucks just feel like they have no power.

or toss on a profec b or equal boost controller to the stock gate and have perfect control and faster spool.

if the stock wastegate is crapy, how would a boostcontroller help?

Correct
The stock wastegate is too small and the way it dumps the exhaust isn't exactly the most efficient either.
As long as you leave the cat in place I've had good luck with a simple mechanical controller although I am sure the electronic ones are nice.

There are ways to get a stock wastegate to control boost almost as well as an external wastegate.

That is what the bird told me that flew by anyways.

It does require some work though.
