I've replaced drier and AC compressor. Once I get the orifice tube replaced I'll be taking the Ty to a shop to evacuate and recharge the system.

Minor correction. The "dryer" on our trucks is actually an "accumulator." I agree on changing it. But why the orifice? It's not a tube per-sey but a plastic filter and orifice that fits in the tube. Just wondering the motive for changing it? And don't forget the pressure sw is adjustable. It may need to adjusted when switching to the new refrigerant. Try not to let them sell you a new sw. BTW that sw can be removed with the system charged. There is a schrader valve in the fitting preventing system loss.

I"ve seen both terms related to the accumulator and get what you are saying about the orifice filter is actually not the tube. The orifice filter came with the kit I purchased and figured it can't hurt to replace it if I have a new one. The other one is probably 23+ years old.

Gotcha on the kit. Agreed. An accumulator is used with an orifice tube (us) and a receiver/dryer is used with a thermal expansion valve, often has a sight glass. I didn't even know there was a difference until last spring when I learned this so don't feel bad... :rotf:

When I converted to R134A long ago, I installed a variable orifice tube part # 9-2050 by Automotive Temperature Control Products (ATCP). It is supposed to give 8 to 12F colder air at idle and less wear and tear at higher speeds. A quick search did not come up with that number currently, but Autozone carries what looks to be the same thing: Santech A/C Orifice Tube
Part Number: MT0631 for $32.99. Anyway, for what it's worth, it seems to work well in my truck.

Accumulator, Drier, that silver canister thing thats in the way for the downpipe to be removed.
If your system had a hole, there might be dirt or other things in your system. I had to replace my orifice tube twice. The first one got clogged. A/C runs like a champ now.

I tried to use a variable tube and it didn't work. Maybe it was the wrong one, but it was the one rockauto said. You can rent the equipment from autozone for free and do it yourself if the system is empty. Pretty easy to do actually.

Silver canister thing works. What happened was, last winter/spring I started volunteering at the Diesel and Equipment Tech class at the local JC, Tues and Thurs. Turned out the A/C class uses the same shop on Wednesdays. I get to talking to him (he would wonder through occasionally) and they need vehicles to train with. Side benefit is they'll refill the system for free if you need it. Got the DD refilled. Hung out in his class a few times and learned quite a bit. Especially about silver canister things...:rotf: No clue about the two different systems before that.
See, you can teach an old dog something new occasionally...
