white smoke AFTER head replacement... ideas?

I need some help from veteran engine guys here. Shortly after my rebuild (with boneyard L-35 head upgrade), I have overheating problems and it ends up that the cylinder head is cracked in the #1 chamber all the way across the dome. So I replace it with another boneyard L-35, have it magged and decked and the whole nine yards.... well immediately upon startup I get the white smoke from the tailpipe, though not nearly as bad as before. Still getting the classic pressurized cooling system and overheat, and now #1 and #5 cylinder seem to have antifreeze signs on the plugs. The deck on the block was checked while at the machine shop getting bored .030 over for initial rebuild. Anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing my chronic head problems?

head gasket? any signs of water in the oil?

Yeah I was sure it was a head gasket the first time, but ended up being a cracked head. The syptoms definitely scream head gasket now as well, but why immediately after start up? and why on TWO cylinders not adjacent? Im at my wits end with this motor. Im pretty sure youre right about the head gasket, Mike, I just would like to know why that would happen with a brand new one. Thanks for the input... and any further thoughts greatly appreciated...
