WOT, then falls on its face.

SyTyless......for now!
I've had this problem for some time, and learned to live around it, but knowing things aren't right is getting to me. Scenario:

Flat-foot it from a light, engine revs up, truck takes off, boost is normal, but around 4700-5000 the truck will suddenly slow down.(no shift yet) I thought it was overboost, but doing a rolling 3rd gear WOT reveals on my aftermarket gauge a solid 14.7.

I know the factory shift point is around 4700 at WOT, when all this chaos begins...Rev limiter maybe?

So far I havent done much, just the basic ignition tuneup in the spring, and recently cleaned the TB/upper plenum. The truck runs and has power at all other times, even at WOT except for when it gets to the upper range.

I'm thinking that something is sketchy with the governor weights or the trans itself, since the shifts are at the right time, (speed vs throttle pos), and they're quick, but not necessarily "firm"?

Other thought is that there may be knock retard, but I don't have DM or access to one, so determining that would be hard.

I might try another cap/rotor and a set of good NGK's and try a .030 gap, see if its the spark getting blown out or something along those lines.

The only other issue is erratic boost. Getting on a freeway onramp, constant throttle, the boost will go up and down, almost surging, but not overboosting. Truck has a Waller 57mm turbo and no cat- I thought about installing one to try to bring it back to stock as far as backpressure is concerned to see if that is the source of problem.

Other info- I checked (or tried) the timing, it appears as though the mark on the balancer is 180 out, although the truck runs fine. Slipped balancer? (yes I unhooked the wire)

IC system is fully functional, EGR vac line is unhooked and plugged, decided to try it as an experiment. Fuel pressure is 50lb @ idle w/ the line hooked up. (truck had an Ultimate before I bought it), stock injectors, silicone vac lines installed by the previous owner(s) stock chip/ecm. Still havent figured out the TC lockup issue either, but I'm leaning towards the solenoid (new brake switch, tried to manually lock through ALDL with no luck)

Long list of little (irritating) things, but I'd like to get to the point where I can confidently drive it a few hundred miles at a shot without worry. Thanks for any and all input!

Re: WOT, then falls on its face.

I'm having a similiar issue, but I believe I'm overboosting with the random tech hi-flow cat.
I'm also unable to pass smog these days.

Gary, I also have a similar problem, but haven't had time to do any more yet this year. The truck still starts immediately and runs ok, so it is something I need to look at, but unfortunately other family and work priorities have prevented any more investigation. see post below.

Try loosing the TV cable at the throttlebody so it shifts sooner.

You can't hear it cutting out can you? (missing under boost) over 10psi...

If your over or close to 15psi It might be getting into fuel cut. What chip is in it?

I'm guessing since you don't have DataMaster your not 3bar/code59.

Drop you boost and see if the problem go's away.

Sure be nice if you had some data for us to help you with (hint hint) :)

This would be my guess. You could also be over reving if you have stock heads/cam as doesn't make power much past 4600rpm.

I assume you have an ultimate chip. if you do you don't have a rev limiter. The stock chip has a rev limiter ~4700rp, you wouldn't be able to rev past 4700rpm if you had a limiter.

Eratic boost is 'normal' for someone who hasn't tweaked the settings in the prom (ie code $59).

Re: WOT, then falls on its face.

Nope, no Ultimate, but from what the previous owner told me, when it did have an Ultimate it ran excellent and managed to click off a 13.6 pass. I want to get one at some point when funds allow. I believe it might be the rev limiter as well.

Yup. Stock chip, injectors, DP, and IC. Waller 57mm with stock boost, no cat.

Your definately hitting a rev limiter at just over 4600 rpm. The stock chip wasn't fuel for 50# base FP (43.5 psi) so you might be running into rich fuel micture as well

Re: WOT, then falls on its face.

Hmm, thanks for the info!! Definitely makes sense- Someone at some point may have optimized the trans (and the shift points) for the Ultimate.

Re: WOT, then falls on its face.

WIth a 50psi base FP, it sounds like it was optimized for an ultimate chip program...

It was, Don (raist103) had the truck before me and had his Ultimate installed.

Re: WOT, then falls on its face.

Hitting a rev limiter from a stop, generally = trans problems.
Either a slipping band, or a sticking governor.

Stock shift points are around 4300 for the 1-2.

Re: WOT, then falls on its face.

Feels like a sticking or a changed governor, since the engine is being loaded the whole time, its not free-revving like a slipping trans would.

I've had this problem for years. I haven't driven the ty for years. I'm going to start the truck and try to pass smog so i can work on this issue in the near future.

I was running one of the earlier ultimate chip. The ECU/ECM died so I removed it and replaced the ECU/ECM from one from a sunbird (using the ty prom of course). Never installed the ultimate after this incident with the failed ECU/ECM as I"m not sure if it was related to the ultimate.

I'm also running an AFPR (current am not sure what pressure it is set to) and a walbro 255l/hr pump.

I'd like to get my issue resolved in a few months (don't have the time currently - hopefully in a few months).

I have the datamaster cable somewhere, but not the software. I ordered it a few years ago and just never touched the ty after that. I'm not even sure where the datamaster cable is right now.

Good luck with resolving your issue.
